Goal: Pressure the ball high up the field to win the ball to score goals by forcing play into the inside of the field.
Overview: In previous sessions, we have asked players to force the opponents wide and use the sideline as an extra defender. In this session we want the strikers to press the center back in possession and cut off the pass to the sideline to force play inside where we can win the ball in a favorable position.
Orientation Team Formation: 4-3-3
Learning Team Formation: 3-5-2
Attacking TTP: Spread out, switch point of attack, and create a 2v1
Defending TTP: Get compact and keep it compact, Pressure with cover and balance
Who: #6 #8 #10 #7 #11 #9 #9
What: Defending in the final third using both #9s to dictate the press
Where: Final Third
When: As we are out of possession in the final third
Why: We want to win the ball high up the field in the middle of the field in order to create chances to score goals.
Coaching Points:
We want one of the strikers to engage and press of the centrebacks first while cutting off the pass wide.
Remind the players we press to win the ball high to score goals not just to win possession
Technical Points:
Address the body shape of the #9 when pressing the center backs in order to force play inward.
Guided Questions:
Who should press the center back if we want to force play inside? The strikers coming from a wide angle
With the passes out wide blocked where can the 7 and 11 go? Inside
Why do we press high up the field and force play inside? To create and score goals
Player actions:
The #9s need to press by forcing play inside. They can do this by using their body shape when pressing to cut off the pass to the fullback.
The #7 #11 can come inside giving us a numeric advantage
The #6 #8 #10 are compact and want to invite the pass centrally so they can press right away

Warm Up
After they are done with their Dynamic warmup they are looking to do a possession game with a high intensity that encourages winning the ball right away from the opponent. In this exercise, there are two teams split evenly both with their own half where they are trying to keep possession. When the blues have the ball they are trying to keep possession away from 3 reds. If the Reds win possession they are looking to score in the mini goals by the blue team. If the blues make 5 passes they can switch the ball to the red team and have the opportunity to win the ball on their half to score.
In this Stage work with the team that is pressing on cutting passing lanes and putting pressure on the ball and how though they are outnumbered they can be aggressive in order to score goals.
How should you look to press when outnumbered? Press on an angle to block a passing lane

Orientation Phase: (15 minutes or however long it takes to bring out the problem)
In the orientation phase, we are working with the possession team who are looking to build out and score on the counter goals. Encourage the team in possession to get spread and to move the ball to the free player on the field. To really bring out the problem encourage play the orientation team to build out wide so we can work on forcing them inside in the learning phase.

When the number six gets on the ball who can we create a 2v1 with? The fullbacks

Activity Description: In this activity we have the Orientation team the reds #1, #2, #3, #4, #5, #6, #8, #10 vs the Learning Team the blues #6, #8, #10, #7, #9 #9, #11. The orientation team is looking to score on the two counter goals while the learning team is looking to score on the big goal.
Learning Phase 35 Minutes:
In the learning phase, we are working with the pressing team. We want to force the opponent inside so starting position of the strikers is really important. The Strikers need to start wide and whatever side the ball is played to the near striker needs to put pressure on the ball while also curving their run and stopping the pass outwide to the fullback. The other striker is then looking to stop the switch to the other centerback. The blue #6, #8, #10 now need to invite the pass centrally and as soon as the ball is played they need to put immediate pressure on the ball and need to press from different angles. The #7 and #11 can also tuck more inside so we can overload the middle of the field.
Guided Questions:
How should the near striker press the center back? Using their pressing shadow to cover the pass out to the fullback and force play inside and the other striker stops the switch.
What can the 7 and 11 do to help us win the ball? come inside the field
Why do we press? To create and score goals
Duration: 35 minutes 11x3 (1 minute to bring them in, 1 minute Freeze moment, 1 minute water break)

Implementation Phase (20 Minutes)
In the implementation phase, we are looking to see if we can use what we just learned in a game. When either team is defending in the final third can they try and win the ball back high up the field? Can they do it by forcing play inside where we have a numeric advantage?
