Head SAFE: Brain Build Up
Purposeful Play:
Two teams play a game to goal on a small sided field in 10 minute intervals (adjust time as necessary)
The field represents the brain and 1 game represents 10 years playing a contact sport.
Every 15 seconds, the coach tosses out ~3-5 cones (or other objects) onto the field.
Any player that steps on a cone/object or hits a cone/object must freeze for 15 seconds.
Play for 5 minutes and then stop the game.
Purposeful Questions After the Game - Ask Questions and Listen to Answers:
What kinds of things ‘build up’ in your brain if you play contact sports for a long time?
What do you think the cones in this game represent?
Purposeful Play - Use Your Imagination or Our Suggestions to Create New Ways of Playing:
Before playing again, ask the participants for different decisions that can help prevent brain damage.
After making 5 successful uninterrupted passes, ANYONE on the field can call out 1 of these good decisions. Each ‘Good decision’ called out = slowing down the rate that the coach throws cones onto the field.
Purposeful Questions After the Game - Ask Questions and Listen to Answers:
What is the name of the protein that builds up in our brain and inhibits neurotransmitters? Tau protein
Can your brain heal the damage it accumulates by itself?
How can we protect our brains today from neurological disease in the future?
