Football/Soccer Session (Beginner): Handball!

Description

Handball! The only time players can use their hands! This game develops positional understanding, movement off the ball and moving forward as a unit.

Equipment and setup

20x30 yard field with endzones (only the endzone player is allowed in)

Equal teams of 4-5 players (including 1 end zone player)

Directions

Players throw and catch to each other as it is easier to get them understanding the concept of passing and moving and team play/possession better. One team (red) starts on the end line and teammates support by running into space. The player with the ball throws to a teammate. That teammate CANNOT run with the ball but can only move by throwing it to another teammate who supports. They move the ball forward and have to get the ball to a player in the end zone, where a goal is scored. Play then starts with the opposite team.

The team without the ball cannot steal the ball out of the hand but can block and if the ball becomes free, they can run and get it and the ball changes possession.

Coaching points

• Attackers without the ball need to support - Where would be a good place to be? In space?
• What is a good attacking shape? Diamond or triangle - why?
• Defenders have to be organized and communicate
• What is a good defensive shape? Compact?

Change the difficulty

• If one team is dominating, you can change the numbers on each side
• Have build out line to allow players to throw the ball amongst each other before the opponents can pressure

Context of the gameUsing throwing and catching makes it easier for understand the concept of passing and moving on the field, moving as a team and a unit and also attacking and defensive shape as the players don't need to worry too much about soccer technique, and can concentrate on positioning
