Introductory session aimed at establishing rotational cues triggered by the CF within a 3421 to allow the shape of the team to change to a 3412
This session would be replicated later within the season and once the players have a grasp of this in game then would add a further rotational trigger coming from the 2 AM
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Explanation
Two variations of the exercise and you progress to the second variation.
Variation One (Reds) - replicates combination play building centrally with the CF coming short and playing around the corner
- end player passes to the top
- gets set back
- CF comes short to receive pass
- plays around the corner to forward runner who joins the end of the cue
- replicated down the other side
Variation Two (White) - replicates ball through post rotation with the CF coming short and AM going beyond
- Ball played into the near player
- CF comes short and ball played into them
- CF sets ball back
- CDM plays through to AM who has moved to the end area
- Players rotate through to the next position - CF moves once they have started the same process down the other side
Progression
- add a defender who can block one of the two passes (passive - not interceptions) allow PDE for players to choose which pattern they will use.
- rotation then is the end player (CB) becomes the defender and the defender becomes the first receiver

Explanation
Aim of the session to build familiarity of CF dropping and the AM going beyond (changing 3421 to 3412)
- Reds set up within a 1221 formation so mirroring the CF, AM and CDM within the 3421
- White set up in a 121 formation so represents CM and CB within a 433 /4231
- Red aim to progress the ball end to end into either the CF, or, into the side boxes (shown in red) for the AM
- Reds are locked into their respective zones except as follows:
* CF can drop into mid zone and AM can move into red boxes
- Whites are only allowed as many in a zone as there is red
- Timed drill which at the conclusion reds and whites are switched
Rotation Trigger
- This is the main focus of the exercise and represents the main training point
- To start off this rotation can only be triggered by the CF coming into the mid zone, at which point the AM push higher into the boxes
Progression
- unlock the whites - let them go anywhere in the middle area (end player locked in)
- allow back middle red to carry ball into the other zone
Coaching Points
Player Tasks (Coaching Cues)
- Can CDM work the ball between them and the deepest player to create an overload on one side to play the ball forward into the next zone
- Can AM take positions to receive from the CDM but keep a passing lane open to the CF
- Can CF when appropriate overload the middle area 3v2 and trigger the rotation
- When rotation triggered can the ball be played into the AM ASAP COACHING CUE - CDM either play directly to the AM, or, into the CF to play into the AM
After 2nd progression (if players have picked up idea) - CDM coming into the zone is a trigger for the CF to come short to receive forcing AM higher

Explanation
- 7v7 (plus GK) training game
- White within a 223 formation replicating a 4231
- Red within 421 representing a 3421
- If White win then they have 10 seconds to score into the mini goals
Aim
- to work on the red team understanding as to when to rotate the front three to create space when attacking central
Pitch Layout
- playing in a half field pitch with the corners from the edge of the 18 yd to the approx third line cut off. This is so that play is channeled centrally, decreasing the space and therefore making the front 3 work hard for their opportunities
- red flat markers in place to signify ensure that one red is always required behind that line
- yellow signifies the offside line
Restarts
- Coach led (black) who plays too either of red #6 or #8
- As session progresses then allow different start points /throws etc
Coaching Points
Player Task (coaching cue)
- Can #6 and #8 position to receive the ball in order to play forward from restarts (When ball is to be restarted #6 and #8 position themselves one lower than pressure line and one beyond. Body position open to play forward where possible)
- Can #10 and #7 take positions to create passing lanes into themselves and #9 when the CDM have the ball (When the ball is with either #6 or #8 then ballside #7 or #10 position within the half space - blue lines - and outside of the CB).
Secondary task to ballside #2 or #11 where can you position to impact the decision of the white winger?
- Can #9 recognise when the right time is to come shorter and when it isnt to occupy and force back the CB (when passing lane to ballside #10 or #7 then #9 can come short into the hole that the movement by the AM has created. If passing lanes are open then remain higher and away from ball to open up opportunity to run beyond and /or create passing opportunity)
Secondary task to #7 and #10 if #9 comes short what do they do?
- Can the #6 or #8 not in possession provide a support option to the front three player passed too (As pass is played in take a supporting angle to receive between white CDM in central channel
Secondary task to the ball player what position should they take up to limit effectiveness of a counter attack should the ball be turned over.

Overview
Overview -
This is an issue which occured repeatdly two seasons ago when we last used the 3421 formation as follows:
What: During attaking build up we wouldnt have any joined up rotation of the front three which meant that when the #9 came short to receive none of the other players looked to go behind which allowed the defence to compact the space and increase the chance of attacks fizzling out
Where: Top of the mid third progressing into the attacking third. Central play.
Who: Principally the #9, #7 and #10 Secondary: Ballside wingback
When: Attacking build up within secured possession when ball is with one of the CDM
Why:
- ballside wingback too deep and not imapcting the FB positionally meaning that space is condensed to the #7 or #10
- non ballside WB not taking a position to influence the FB and allowing the defence to shift and remain compact
- CDM within the same line not allowing depth to any latteraly pass and forcing them to play into tighter areas
- CF moving into the covershadow
- ballside #7 and #10 starting too central and condensing the avaliable space
- Lack of appreciation of movement and space by front three and not working off one another, rather independent movements, be this #9 coming into an area to receive when there is no reason too, or, #7 and #10 after seeing #9 drop then also taking angles to receive, rather than exploit space to create more space angles for teammates
- #7 and #10 not looking to stretch the play
- Ballplayer not having their head up and forcing play into tight areas
