Working on using zonal marking in the midfield to keep opponents away from the back defensive line and in the process force turnovers and cut passing lanes. Emphasis on the proper position of the third defender needed to reduce exposure to quick switches of field.

All players in a large circle, each with a ball. Begin with inside-inside(tick tocks) one minute. Next toe touches, 30 seconds with each foot. Next roll the ball side-to-side with the bottom of each foot for 30 seconds. Next stand on left foot and roll the ball around the leg left with the right foot for 30 seconds and then switch. Optional: Depending on time available and subject of training can also work in scissors and/or step overs.

Players split into groups of three with two balls for each group. One player is in the middle. The other two set up at a 90 degree angle as servers. The middle player alternates taking rolling serves and one touch passing back back to the serve. The player alternates left and right foot. Emphasize proper techinique with inside of foot, ankle locked, with toe pointed up. After a minute, rotate to next player. Emphasize form over speed. Encourage building up speed if/when player gets a rhythm.

30 x 30 grid split into 3 10x 30 grids. 3 players in each grid. Players in outside grids pass the ball in an attempt to find a lane to complete a penetrating pass to grid on other end. One player at a time from middle grid can enter outside grids to pressure the ball but they cannot tackle. Other players use cover and balance principles to cut passing lanes and make an interception. Rotate middle group so all players that play defensive positions get time in the "hot box". Drill should be intense for those in middle. Emphasize third defender positioning. Third defender must be close enough to far attacker to be able to cut them off but must also be close enough to middle attacker than they can become 2nd (support) defender when ball moves. 3rd defender must be able to see ball and they far attacker.

30 wide by 15 long grid with 3 goals on each end. A group of 3 attacks, a second defends, and the third waits behind the goals behind the attacking team. Attackers play until they score or lose possession. Attackers rotate off of field to behind goals they were attacking. Defenders then become the attackers going the other way. The original resting team jumps on to play defense. Coach should have a pile of balls to feed to start each play without a wait. Defenders use pressure, cover, balance to defend all 3 goals at once. Emphasis on 3rd defender keeping a position that allows them to reach backside attacker if field is switched while being close enough to provide cover on middle attacker. 3rd defender must be able to see ball and the wide attacker off their shoulder. If they cannot see both, they must drop until they can.

Half-field scrimmage using cones in place of back line. This emphasizes to midfielders that they have a large responsibilities in defending. Midfield must use pressure, cover, balance principles to defend against opponent attack with a back line that only serves as an offsides trap. Live players can be mixed in for cones depending on the number of players available for training session.
