Description

Key Players: 7,9,11 Secondary: 8s

  • 1/4 - Field 1A
  • Without the Ball (D)
  • D-Balance
  • Close openings (D)
  • Middle Third
  • Maintenance 50%
  • Cognitive Load: High
Coaching Points:
  • How we pressure as the 7/11 to either win the ball or force it backwards
    • Cues
      • Opposing 4/5 is in possession
      • Our team is defensively organized on the correct side of the field
      • They look up to play/do play into their 2/3
    • Actions
      • Angle and speed of approach
      • Travel as the ball travels towards your mark
      • Get touch tight and fight hard for the ball - make the opponent look down
      • Body shape forces them to the side-line or backwards
    • Reasons
      • By getting there on time we deny forward options and increase the chance of winning the ball high up the field
      • The harder we fight, the more likely we are to win the ball
    • Success
      • We arrive to our mark before the ball, as the ball arrives
      • We either intercept the pass, steal the ball, or force them to play backwards
  • Cutting the field in half by the 9
    • Cues
      • Ball is in the possession of the opposing 2/3
      • 2/3 is forced to go backwards and they look to play their 4/5
    • Action
      • Quickly cut off the passing lane between the 4 and 5
      • If cut off, pressure the ball
    • Reason
      • By denying the switch of play we make remaining compact easier and therefore make the team's defending job easier
      • If we deny the simple pass we encourage them to play either in the compact space or play long where we could intercept
    • Success
      • 4/5 on the ball is forced to keep it on the current side
      • 4/5 on the ball is forced into a sloppy or longer pass
  • Deny the penetrating pass from 4/5 to 7/11
    • Cues
      • Opponent 4/5 is in possession of the ball
      • Ball is travelling back to the 4/5 from the 2/3 we just pressured
      • 4/5 has/will have the time and space to play forward

    • Action
      • We must tuck inside (again) to deny the direct pass from the 4/5 into the near-side 7/11
      • Get connected with our near-side 8
    • Reason
      • We want to encourage them to play wide to re-attempt our trigger moment of winning the ball there
      • Our goal is to deny their ability to break lines, this pass could break 3 at one time
    • Success
      • The opponent plays wide allowing us to pressure there again
      • We intercept an attempted longer pass
