This technical practice start as an unopposed activity before progressing into an opposed practice. Two Blue players combine from the deep end and play the ball to their wide player. The two players make a run towards the goal to attempt to finish from wide player cross. Immediately after a goal is scored or the GK makes a save or the ball is out of play, the next pair from the Red team restart play from their deep end and play the ball to their wide player to finish in the opposite goal. Team switch sides on coach's command.
Coaching Points:
- Movement to receive the ball out wide.
- Movement away from the ball to create space to come back into to receive.
-Type of cross; Crossing player now getting and understanding of what type of cross is needed. This will change each time due to the defenders positioning, movement from team mates and understand your team mates qualities.
Timing of runs to finish; Variation of movements. Speed of movement is important to loose the defenders. Start off slow then explode into a finishing position.
Progressions:
- Both team compete for two minutes.
- Include 1 defender to create a 2v1 to finish.
- Opposition wide player can apply passive pressure on the wide player delivering the cross and progresses to full pressure upon wide player's first touch.
- Add 2 defenders and additional attacker to create a 3v2 to finish.
Regression:

Organization:
Set up as shown.
Instructions:
2 x teams of 7. When a team is in possession, a player can dribble or move to receive in the wide area to deliver a cross unopposed (defending team not allowed in to wide area). If team finishes from a cross, it equals to 3 goals. Cones represent offside line.
Coaching Points:
- Movement to get the ball wide; Players should be looking to move into wide areas to receive the ball to deliver a cross. Player should not be in the wide area for more that 3 seconds without receiving the ball.
- Awareness of team mates and defenders positioning; When the players are in wide area they need to recognise when to cross early or when to drive down the line before crossing. If there are forwards in the box and the defenders are unbalanced then encourage players to cross early. If the defenders are set up and there are no forwards in the box then wide players should be running with the ball down the line and forwards should be moving effectively to create goal scoring opportunities.
- Finishing techniques; Forwards need to get into goal scoring opportunities and finish first time using all different techniques depending on the type of cross, heading, volleying, shooting.
Progressions:
- 1 defender is allowed to defend in the wide area.
- Free Play.
