Area - Half pitch
Red team will try to score and blue team will try to defend
If blue team wins the ball they can get a point by passing the ball to the player in the half line.
Progression : Add a attacker
Coaching points : Communication to move as a unit, compact - Centre back should stay compact, time of tackle , Quick pressing, delay, cover - angle and distance of cover, balance - when to move when not to, time of tackle,
working on the depth of the defence making sure the distances are correct not playing too deep to allow the attack to come forward but not also too high to allow to much space between last man and keeper for a through ball for attacker to run into,
looking out for 3 B's Body shape - ball speed - ball control
as the red team move from left to right the movement from defence body shape/ distance between each other and how they react to the weight of pass from attacking team and their control if they don't control the ball or play a bad weight of pass can we close the gap but if they are in control can we pressure but not jump in to gradually force them into a unforced error then defence can counter on that.
when the ball is more to the right as in the picture above i'm looking the left side centre half in picture above to control the line the depth the defensive team play at and as the ball goes from right to left in the picture that will move from the left side centre half to the right side centre half being the deepest player and him taking control of the depth of the team, this done using communication and movement and when the ball is more central one of the centre halves step in while the other controls the depth and width depending on the shape of the attacking team
game is 4 v 4 with a goalkeeper for the attacking team to score against and a player on the half way line for the defenders if they win the ball to pass to
will move it up to a 5 v 4 with attacking team having a striker on the last man to make it harder for defensive team there will be offside in this also to make it realistic
changing the attacking team continuous with the 18 player squad and changing some defender players every 4 or 5 plays to suit squad players for positions so they all get a turn of understanding the topic

9 v 9 game 20 mins including offside
3-3-2 formation
working on Depth as a principle of defence red team will be the defence team and blue attacking team
first few minutes let them play
Coaching points - how is the red teams depth when blue are attacking either too high or too deep
to high allowing too much space between last man and goalkeeper for attacking team to run in behind
or 2 deep inviting the attacking team to attack into our final third too freely and get shots off
are the red team talking shuffling across as a team as the ball is played keeping good shape,
when to step in
- defensive team caught to high stop correct the Depth for the situation move the players into the shape the coach feels is right for the scenario correct body shape to try and force attacking team into a safer space for the defenders to have more joy also move the ball and show the ripple affect
- defensive team caught too deep or as the attack happens the defence keeps going back and back and no one taking charge of the line, if caught too deep stop and correct the players where they should have been and why and how it helps break down the attack and showing the fine balance between having good depth and too much depth
- when depth is good and team had success step in to praise
Personal performance
i feel i will make sure the players knowledge of depth is well drilled into them as there is a fine margin between good and bad depth (too deep or too high) and try and stop in different areas of the field (when stepping in) and sort out the shape to give a better idea of the depth for the situation even if it takes an extra 30 seconds to minute per stoppage to correct the shape and why because if this works well the team become more defensively sound for stopping the attack which should have less goals scored per game.
