Description

This session focuses on the principles of playing through and playing around. that builds from technical element, into specific, and finally into a 9 v 9.

Although we want to play wide with our forward passes, we recognise that playing through the midfield give more variety in how we want to attack. Playing into midfield can narrow up the opposition and thus create space out wide or if they are not narrow, allow us to play through the middle very quickly into the final third creating opportunities.

This session works on movement off the ball to create space so passes can break lines and the team in posession can play around or switch the play giving the person on the ball options and decisions.

For the opposition who are not being coached, they should begin to recognise and react to triggers more quickly  (Stay compact & shuffle over quickly)

Specific Session (35 mins)

Key Factors

  • Playing Through
  • Playing Around

Opposition Principles

a. Pressing fast

b. Being narrow and compact to prevent being played through

c. Pressing the ball to force the opposition back

d. Communication

e. Protecting space in behind

In posession principles

a, Movement off the ball to create space

b, Stay wide when in posession

c, Communication

d, Play quick ( limited touches)

e, Switch the play quickly before the opposition have time to shuffle over.

Organisation

  • Total time of 20mins
  • Area size of 20-25m Wide by 30-40m Long (dependant on age of players)
  • 12 players (With player on the outside creating width and giving options when in posession, a player in the end zone can be added into the middle on each team if a regression is needed)
  • 3 sets of bib, 3v3 within Blue zone
  • Floating players on the outside play with team in possession
  • Aim is to move the ball from Zone A to Zone C through Zone B with the minimum number of passes
  • Once ball reaches the end zone then recycle back via wide floating players to the starting zone (allows recovery and creates width)
  • Have a stack of balls by each zone to maximise ball rolling time
  • 4 rounds in total; 3-4mins per round

Conditions

1. Max two touch for players outside blue square

2. Max of three touches for players inside (unless we are working on them beating a player)

3. No thrown ins

4. If possession is lost, then restart at the end where the ball came from in that phase

Scoring

5 points: if ball is moved from A to C through B in 2 passes

3 points: 3 passes or more

2 points: if passes requires players on outside

Progressions

1. Add forward player into defenders zone to put more pressure on CBs when in possession

2 Add a player from the end zone into the middle creating a 4v4 if the players are finding it too easy.

Regression

1 Make the area size bigger

Block A: Positioning On and Off The Ball

When CB has the ball, the CMs should not be moving towards them as this will close down space. They should look to play as high up as possible (especially the ACM). The two DCMs should be wide. The wide players outside should not be beyond the halfway line - in this session we operate them as FBs

CMs can take passes into feet where they are and therefore need to shield & protect the ball well. They can also push high and then look for passes into the space they have now created (push marker back and move to receive thus creating space)

Block B: Body Shape to Receive, First Touch, First Time Pass

Players need to be on their toes with open body to receive. Are they using body shape to play a quick pass or do they want to receive and take opposition on.

Block C: Passing Angles

Multiple angles

a. Square on = pass back to CBs

b. Sideways outside = pass to FB then possibly playing around (FAW principles of play)

c. Sideways inside = looking for option of combination play or seeking pass through breaking lines (FAW principles of play)

Block D: Movement of all players and 3rd Man Movement

a. Can we play to a CM who plays to another CM who then makes that pass forward switching the play or even breaking lines to plasy to the forwards feet

SSG (15 mins)

Key Factors

Playing through (Breaking lines)

Playing Around

Organisation

  • A 30 minute SSG incorporating all aspects worked on in the previous drill
  • Reds against blues 9 v 9 game one team playing 1-3-1-3-1 (looking to create width and play around and fullbacks can create overloads) the other team will play a !-2-3-2-1 ( Looking to play through the middle and play wide also play on the counter attack)
  • 4 pop up goals are there to encourage width into the game, switch of play and playing around.
  • Progression Create a wave game if a goal is scored the play starts from the team who conceded the goal ( creating a counter attack situation maximising ball contact time)

  • Key points in posession Looking to play through the thirds by breaking lines and switching play
  • Creating space by playing to players out wide
  • Weight of pass
  • Movement off the ball to creste space for others moving the opposition out of position
  • Key points out of posession Stay in your shape and remain compact making it harder for the opposition to play through.
  • Shuffle over in order to stop the opposition playing around and switching the play.
  • Always maintaining concentration & communication
  • Challenges & Targets Players must look to break a line, switch play or play around.
