Description

This is a defensive session focused on pressing from the front in the 3-4-1-2. It is based off a 16 player session however practices can be adjusted to suit numbers.

The goal is to get our players to understand the principles of pressing high - Curve run to cut off the options, press up as a team, man mark to prevent easy out balls

All parts of the session (Warm up/technical practice - Tactical practice - Match) will have a focus on pressing to ensure players are working on these principles and implementing them

Warm Up/Technical - Pressing rondo (10 mins)

Method:

  • Players will split themselves into 2 groups of 4, and 2 groups of 3, with 2 spare players
  • The 4 groups will form a rondo, with no player in the middle and each group will have a ball
  • The 2 spare players will then go into one of the groups and be the middle man
  • Each group will start passing, the 2 groups without a middle man will pass the ball unopposed
  • The 2 groups with the man in the middle will try to keep the ball away from them
  • If the ball is won by the man in the middle, the player who lost the ball will immediately sprint to another rondo and try to win the ball back
  • The man in the middle will join that rondo on the outside and pass the ball
Objective:
  • Warm players up for the session
  • Allow players to work on pressing technique before main drills

Coaching Points:

  • Quick pressing + transition: We are looking for the player who lost the ball to quickly transition to defense and press in another rondo
  • Quick reactions: We want players to react quickly and look to win the ball back
  • Press technique: Can players bring in pressing principles? Slowing down when approaching player, arms length away, on toes, side on, curved run to cut off options
  • Communication: Can players in unopposed rondo react quickly and communicate when player is coming in to press?

Tactical - Pressing from the front in 3-4-1-2 - 9v7 (30 mins)

Method:

  • The attacking team (red) will set up in a 1-4-3-1 (based on a standard 4-3-3) with a back 4, a #6, #8, #10 in midfield, and a striker at the halfway line, acting as a target man
  • The defending team (blue) will set up in a 4-1-2 (based on a 3-4-1-2) with a #6, #8, a left back, a right mid, and a #10 in midfield, and 2 up front (1 striker and the other wide mid)
  • In this example assume the left mid has joined the striker up front, and the left back has moved up to left mid
  • The ball starts with the keeper who will play it to one of the back 4, or the #6
  • The red team are trying to play the ball up to the target man at the halfway line
  • The blue team are trying to press high, win the ball back, and score
  • If the blue team win the ball back towards midfield, can they quickly counter and score, and can the red team quickly transition to defend?
Objective:

  • Get players used to pressing in 3-4-1-2
  • Get players to set pressing traps
  • Disturb build up and win the ball back high up the pitch

Coaching Points:

  • Press Technique: When the ball is played from the keeper, the nearest player will press the man with the ball, while the other striker will cut off the option to the other CB, and the GK
  • Pressing Traps: The goal is to force the ball to the wings where either the full-back (the player running in the above example) or the wide mid will press. The wide players need to stand off the fullbacks to encourage the pass to be played wide
  • Man Mark: Every other player must be man marked to prevent easy passes out
  • Quick transition: If the ball is won the blues look to score immediately. Can the reds transition to defence to prevent a shot?

Match - With focus on high press (20 mins)

Method:

  • 8v8 match to end the session, with a focus on high pressing and intensity
  • Normal match rules, but teams get 2 goals if they can score directly from high press from goal kick
  • Encourage players to implement what they just learned
  • Keep intensity high, if ball goes out coach can drop a ball and play restarts from there
  • Keep supply of footballs in goal and on sidelines to encourage quick restarts

Coaching Points:

  • Focus on session goals: Pressing high, transition to attack when ball is won
  • Focus on transitions: How do attacking team react if they lose the ball from their goal kick? Quickly transition to defend and prevent a shot
  • Positioning: Make sure players are sticking to positions and working as a team
