An introduction to combination play and finishing

Set Up
Neutral zone approx 5 wide (full of footballs).
Attacking areas approx 15 x15.
In each attacking zone 1 x GK and 2 x attackers
Defenders spread around attacking area.
Organisation
Attacker collects ball from central area.
On collection defender moves in to create a 2 v 1.
Once attack has concluded attacker collects another ball, a new defender enters area.
After all balls used players rotate.
Progressions
Change areas.
Change overload attackers
Change amount of defenders
Change when defenders enter

Attackers to scan and assess position and movement of defender.
Can you quickly move into goal scoring range.
Which attacker is in best position to shoot/ score
Look to eliminate defender

2 x players in neutral zone.
Organisation
GK serves the ball to a neutral player.
Neutral player in turn plays the ball to the attackers.
Attackers look to combine to create shooting chance/ shot on goal.
Change roles at a suitable time.
Progressions
Change overloads.
Neutral players to combine before feeding attacking team.
Neutral players to join in attacking zone.
Play with one ball i.e. directional if defenders win ball either play to neutral players of attacking teams (allow rotation).
Coaching points / Questions
Can neutral players find best pass into forwards
Forwards to create space to receive pass and evade defender
Awarness of position of defenders / teammates / defender
Look for clever play i.e feints, quick turns to shoot, one twos and comninations with team mates.

Set Up
Area Approx 15 x 25.
Players split into two teams (attackers and defenders + 2 GKs).
Attackers at side of pitch with balls.
GKs in goal.
Defenders split next to both goals.
Organisation
Players decide how many players to attack goal and the size of the overload.
Coach rolls the ball to attacking team and sends out defenders.
If attackers score same attackers continue to attack other goal with new ball rolled out by coach.
If defenders gain possession they attempt to counter attack to conclude pratice.
If ball exits area practice is over.
Progressions / Amendments
Area can be adapted as can scoring.
Scoring 1v1 = 2 points, 2v2 = 4 points
2v1 = 2 points, 3v2 = 3 points
3v1 = 1 points, 3v3 = 5 points

Can you shoot first time?
How can you eliminate defenders? (dribbling skills/movement off the ball)
Assess position of the goalkeeper.
Which shooting skill to beat goalkeeper
Look for finishing rebounds
Encourage attackers to beat an opponent to create overload before looking to pass to teammate.
