Aerial Ball Control for Possession

Football/Soccer Session Plan Drill (Colour): Tech Warm-up

Tech Warm-up (15 mins)

Dynamic Stretches - high knees, pull-ups, butt kickers, reach downs/scoops, open gate, close gate, high kicks, straight leg back kicks, side shuffles, "v", karoke, jog/jump header, skips, jog, sprint

Gates with Partners (set 9 gates for 16-18 players).

5x5 for each player

5 repetitions each with movement to another gate every rep.

- person with ball serves to player who will:

a. Volley back right and Volley back left (toss underhand)

b. Trap down with top of foot and pass back (toss like throw-in)

c. Chest and volley back (toss underhand)

d. Offensive Header back. (toss underhand)

e. quad trap and pass back (toss like throw-in)

SSG Throw-ins (15 mins)

Set up 2 grids like one above

3v3 with 3 neutrals throwing the balls in from side.

-Points scored by receiving aerial ball from "yellow" neutral players, trapping it, connecting a pass to your teammate and then getting the final pass to a neutral on the edge.

-First team to 5 wins, rotate neutrals.

Coaching Points: Call for neutral to pass you the ball, use hand jesters and verbal cues to where you want the ball given, encourage players to look over shoulders and take the aerial ball away from pressure, okay to pass directly back to neutral if not on - no point but not a turn over, keep head up and scan for your teammates to make connection.

SSG Tactical (15 mins)

Aerial Control Defensive

- Pink team must Win the Aerial ball and connect ball to Target 7/11 either 4/5 directly skipping midfield line to 7/11 or connecting through 6/8 centrally or wide 2/3. If 2/3 win the ball, they must pass to 7, 11 or 6/8.

Progession:

Pink restricted to 2 touch

Pink heads aerial ball back to keeper and then build out of the back to get to #7/#11

Yellow Attackers play lower pressure defending to start and progress to challenging for balls. If they 7/9/11 win ball in front of pink 4/5 - look to lay ball off to 8/10 for shots or turn and shoot or dribble end line and negative cross to shoot.

5v5 plus 1 yellow neutral in the middle of field; 4 yellow neutrals on endlines

Yellow neutrals - must throw-in balls to team in possession

5 Points - receiving aerial ball, connecting pass to team mates keeping possession and passing to other end line,

1 point - receive aerial ball and head directly back to 1 of the keepers. Keeper restarts with aerial ball.
