Description

Keep building confidence of the players. This session works on both attacking and defending, but todays focus is on closing down attackers and trying to win the ball back.

Arrival activity - SSGs (10 mins)

Organisation

Setup 3 mini pitches goals at both ends, as players turn up put them into games. Work on 2v2. If allplayers turn up make a 1v1 game at the game and rotate players

1v1 - Closing down (15 mins)

Organisation

Create 1v1 squares. Players are split up into pairs - one player is the attacker and has the ball, the other player is the defender and needs to close down the attacker and try and touch the ball.

Instructions

Each attacker has 5 or 10 lives - a life is lost if the defender touches the ball. If the defender kicks the ball out of the square the attacker gets a life back, if the attacker takes the ball out of the square they lose a life. If the defender touches the ball he/she must run out of the square and around the cone to start the 1v1 battle again.

When the attacker loses all their lives swap players over.

Play for 3 minutes and swap if the attacker does not lose all his lives

Coaching Points - focus is on the defender

- Try and close down the attacker quickly.

- Try and delay and jockey first

- Try and poke or block tackle

Attackers

- Try and shield the ball - side on, body between the ball

- Feeling the pressure of the defender, twist and turn and try and run into space

Progression

- change to 2v1 - 2 attackers / 1 defender

- merge squares and create 2v2

Wide play - 1v1 (35 mins)

Organisation

Setup a full pitch with two channels down the left and right side of the pitch.

Instructions

Play as a normal match but when a play goes in one of the channels with the ball only one player from each team is allowed in the channel

Coaching points

- Can you play or dribble the ball into the channels

- Use the 1v1 skills from the previous session - D's close down the atatcker quickly, steal the ball without kicking it out, delay / jockey, poke or block tackle. A's can you protect the ball and make a pass to your team mates

- Defending team - recover and move into defensive shape. Are you stood near an attacking player? Is there any attacking players stood on their own?

- Attacking team - Can you move into space and create passing lines

- Transitions - lose the ball, recover - win the ball, speed of attack
