Dribbling Technique Session (20 mins)

Key Factors

Build confidence with the ball, focus on mechanics of dribbling

  • Keep ball close
  • Vary surface of the ball
  • Keep head up but scan position of the ball
  • Look to change pace
  • Look to change direction

Organisation

  • Dependent on numbers of players available make separate rectangular areas across the pitch.
  • Pair two players at each end of the rectangular area.
  • One player at each end of the rectangle/shaded area should dribble the ball from one end to the other.
  • One player at each side of the area dribbles so that their paths should cross making sure not to collide.
  • When each player reaches the opposite end then their partners repeat the procedure.
Progression:
  • Use inside, outside and laces to dribble the ball
  • Use weaker foot to dribble the ball
Regression:
  • Slow the players down and concentrate on touch and control
  • Make only one player at a time dribble increasing the area.

Dribbling Skill Session (25 mins)

Key Factors

  • Add pressure to the previous technique
  • Concentrate on the mechanics in a more realistic opposed environment
  • Pair similar level players together to maximise effort and compatibility.

Organisation

  • Moving on from Skill session where the areas have previously been defined.
  • Reds now become attackers during the initial drill and blues become defenders.
  • Building on the technique session now a defender is introduced to put pressure on the dribbling player.
  • The dribbling player should look to beat the defender using the dribbling techniques previously used.
  • Successful dribble to the opposite end score 1 point for the red team.
  • Successful interception score 1 point for blue team.
  • Half-way through period, swap the red and blue (or whatever colours are being used) such that the previous attackers become defenders and the previous defenders become attackers.
  • Same scoring exists.
  • Add up scores within individual areas and then as a whole.

Progression:

  • Weaker foot for strong dribblers
  • Narrow area or lengthen area for strong dribblers
Regression:
  • Widen the area or shorten the length
  • Delay the defender or as defender to use weaker foot
Key to progression and regression is pairing similar level players together.
