I gave the players ownership of their own learning throughout the games. I wanted them to reflect on each situation they experienced and for them to understand 'why' creating conditions may help with their learning.

4v4 Games (30 mins)
I asked the players to set up the pitch. They decided that they wanted a small pitch and each goal was made a diffrent colour.
The game started with a simple 4v4 line ball game. Blues attacked the red goal and reds attacked the blue goal.
Before the game started players shared what they have learnt about each other in the 1v1 and 2v2 games. I then asked the players how does this influence the tactical approach to the game now? I then probed for depth and understanding, not just "they are all right foot".
After 5 minutes I asked the players if they wanted to change the size of the pitch and rules of the game. They decided to make the pitch slightly smaller as they wanted to play a game which would improve their possession skills in tight areas. One player suggested to play a keep ball game and when I shout a colour i.e. "yellow" the team in possession attack the yellow gate.
After 5 minutes I asked the players if they wanted to make any changes and they suggested rather than shouting a colour I should have a cone of each colour in my hands and as soon as I hold one of the coloured cones above my head the team in possession attacks the goal of that colour. They felt this would improve their awareness.
