Warm up (20 mins)

i. Session Organisation

  • Split the players into 2x groups, attackers and defenders. They will take it in turns to attack or defend.
  • Cones are set out for the starting positions for attackers (yellow).
  • Cones are laid out in a funnel pattern directing the players towards the goals.
  • If the ball goals outside the red cones, then the attacker is out.

ii. Age groups/Level of Ability

  • U13

iii. Size of Area required

  • Half Pitch

iv. Number of Players - Min: Max:

  • Min 4, Max 16

v. Duration

  • 10 mins

vi. Equipment required

  • Cones and 1x Goal

vii. Structure of the Session

  • Attacking players (blue) have a ball each.
  • 2 at a time they will attempt to dribble from the yellow cone and try to score in the goals.
  • The red cones indicate a line that they can't cross, if they do the ball goes out and they must go back to the end of their queue.
  • Defenders must try to force attackers outside the cones.
  • If a blue player scores, or the ball goes out then the attacker and defender both rejoin their queues and the next pair start, the other blue/red player continue until the same condition.
  • Keep scores and time, swap attackers with defenders after a set time period to encourage pace.

viii. Attacking points

  • Cut into the middle with pace.
  • Use a skill to create an opening in the middle.
  • Keep the head up to shoot accurately.
  • Use the other attacker/defender pair to create more opportunities

ix. Defending points

  • Close down fast, but be prepared to turn quick.
  • Show the attacker the outside so you force them towards the cones
  • Use strength to hold the attacker outside.

x. Coaching points

  • Dribble with ball close to feet
  • Defenders close down quickly.

xi. Progressions

  • Add an extra defender to create a 2v3

Technical session 1 (20 mins)

i. Session Organisation

  • Same Funnel layout with cones. 2 teams, attackers vs Defenders, but this time with goalie. Attackers aim is to win the ball and score, Defenders aim is to dribble over the half way line.

  • Half of pitch

iv. Number of Players - Min: Max:

  • Min 5 players, Max 15

vi. Equipment required

vii. Structure of the Session

  • Goalie always starts with the ball, teams take turns to be attackers or defenders, keep score.
  • Goalie passes to player A or player B.
  • Wide players C and D start outside the funnel, but make runs into space and move up the pitch to the point that they enter the funnel.
  • Player with the ball passes wide to the player on their side (player A to D or player B to C)

viii. Attacking points

  • Close quickly, attempt to block the pass.

ix. Defending points

  • Move the ball wide, quickly.
  • Defenders must make space.
  • Control the ball well and look to where the wide defenders are running.
  • Don't play the ball across the box.

x. Coaching points

  • Look for crisp passing, defensive players don't have to hit the wide players with a pass, as long as they can put it wide and in front of them to run on to.

xi. Progressions

  • Progress on to 3v4.
  • Attacking team to pass to the goalie to start play.
