Technical Key Coaching PointsAccelerate and exploit the spacePlayers should take positive touches when dribbling into the space, and attack with speed.Changes of speed and directionEncourage players to use turns and changes of directions to attack both goals. It is vital that players accelerate away from the defender after changing direction.Skills to beat defender and finishUse ball mastery skills to unbalance or go past the defender and create an angle to shoot on goal. |
This skill practice helps players recognise how to dominate the 1v1 in possession to unbalance and beat the defender and score.
Set Up
15 mins 8-12 players 4-8 balls 4 - 6 bibs 12 cones 20x20 area
Setup
Players in 2 teams attacking a designated diagonal goal. Players can only score in end zone. Play 1v1 with attacker attempting to score in designated goal, and defender attempting to win possession and dribbling out to target square. Once play has finished, attacker becomes a defender and the attacker from the next team attacks the designated team goal.
Make it easier:
Play 2v1 (attacking overload) to goals - This will give your attacking players more chance of success.
Make it more challenging:
Add a score system to increase the tempo. Players can score in any goal. Points system: Goal in front = 1 goal, Diagonal goal = 2 goals, Target square (defenders) = 5 goals
Add 2 x defenders v 1 attacker

1v1 Warm up (10 mins)
Set Up
This warm up encourages lots of touches of the ball and focuses on very specific ball manipulation skills, which will help your players develop better agility, balance and co-ordination and become more comfortable on the ball.
20 mins12 players ball each 25 x 25 area
Setup
Each player has a ball. They dribble around the area performing ball manipulation skills, turns, feints and tricks. Pick 4-5 Ball Mastery techniques and ask the players to focus on each one for 4-5 minutes. Ask your players to learn the techniques before they come to training.
What Ball Mastery Techniques Can My Players Focus On?
There are lots of Ball Mastery techniques that your players can focus on. Make sure they watch the Ball Mastery videos and practice the techniques before they come to training. You will save yourself a big headache if your players are already familiar with the moves. In this practice we use:
Inside Only - Your players move around using only the insides of their feet.
Toe Taps - The players touch the top of the ball with the sole of the foot.
Scissors - The players step over the top of the ball in a circle with one foot, then take the ball in the opposite direction with the other foot.
V Cuts/Pushes - The players drag the ball towards them with the sole of the foot and push it out to the same size with the same foot.
Rollover - The players roll over the ball with the sole of the foot.
Heel Toe - The players fake to pass with the heel of the foot and then bring the ball back to them with their toe and a quick movement.
Make it more challenging:
Make the area smaller
Challenge them to get as many touches as possible in 30 seconds.
