Intro SSG

Players are split in to 4 teams and play 4v4 on two tight pitches. The emphasis is on pressing from the front and players are encouraged to win the ball and counter attack quickly. If possession is regained, the team now in possession has 6 seconds to score. If they cannot do so they must retain possession for a minumum of 3 passes before they can attack the goal. Offsides are played from the half way line.

To encourage players to track the movement of their opponents they could be paired up 1v1 to an individual from the opposition who is the only person they can tackle. Interceptions and blocks can be made against all opponents.

(1) The goals are now removed from the are and the players place a Target Man from each team ion two sides of the central playing area. In the middle section the players play 1v1, with two games being played at the same time. The aim is to get the ball from the opposition Target Man, to their own Target Man to score, the ball is then recycled to the opposition. Rotate Target Men and also rotate opponents throughout games.

(2) To progress each team has 2 Target Men adjacent to one another. Players in the central area play 2v2. The aim remains the same. to get the ball from one Taget Man to another. This time if a team scores the opposition restart with the ball but attack the opposite way. This will work on transition from attack to defence and challenge players to quickly identify danger and track their opponent's movement.

Part Practice 2

Two pitches are added together. The players are split into 2 teams and the goals are reintroduced to the End Zones. Each team has a Target Man in their End Zone who plays unopposed. Teams are allowed to make 4 passes before entering the End Zone and scoring or at any point they can play forward to their Target Man (who plays off a maximum of 3 touches) who sets the ball to a midfield runner. The team then has 3 touches to score or the ball must again be played off the Target Man or 4 passes completed.

To progress a defender could be introduced to the End Zone to challenge the Target Man's hold up play and movement.

Rotate Target Men.

The teams now join together to form an 8 v 8. The pitch remains the same and teams play end to end. One team (blues) attack the goal and the other (reds) score by passing the ball to their Target Man.

The pitch is split into 9 zones to allow the players to have reference points to assist their strategy for pressing. Players are allowed to pick their formation and consider when to press and when to drop and implement sliding, screening and cover. Offside is played from the half way line. Teams will swap ends at half time.
