Skill Intro (20 mins)

Organisation

2 teams with players in groups of 3 in their respective teams start in a 45m x 15m area with 3 groups (one group with a player on each of the markers and 2 groups waiting) starting in the middle and one group on one of the wide markers. Play starts from the marker in the central triangle nearest to the crosser. Players in the middle pass the ball in the sequence and make a run into the box after completing their pass. The result will be a pass to the wide player's feet who will dribble the ball and deliver and early cross (before the 18 yard box) into the box and the three runners trying to score. Player's roll out of the area with the next group starting in the triangle and a new crosser. Rotate crossing group after a set amount of time.

Progressions

  • Crossing from the other side of the area
  • Inside of the foot/ laces technique only
  • Cut-backs or aerial crosses only
  • Free choice for delivery
  • Add passive defenders
Coaching Points
  • Get your head up before crossing (to see what targets are available)
  • Deliver the ball with pace (strike through the ball)
  • Deliver the ball using a variety of techniques (inside of the foot/laces)
  • Deliver the cross with the correct weight
  • Strike underneath the ball for elevation or middle of the ball for ground cross
  • Cross the ball just in front of the intended runner so they can finish first time

Skill Training (35 mins)

Organisation

2 teams + 2 neutrals start in a 30m x 40m area (Two 5m x 20m channels, a 20m x 20m middle area and two 30m x 10m scoring zones) with the two teams in the middle area and a neutral in each of the channels. The team objective is to deliver and early cross (ground or aerial cross) that finds a target to create a goal scoring opportunity. Play starts with the coach who serves the ball in with the possession team attempting to pass the ball to one of the neutrals in the channel as early as possible. Once the ball is in the channel no defenders can enter and the neutral attempts to deliver the ball into the final third early (ground/aerial). A set number of attackers are allowed to make runs into the final third to convert the cross with no defenders allowed to follow into the final third. Once the play is finished, players return to the middle area for next phase.  Possession team gets 1 point if the cross successfully finds a target and they score a goal from the cross with 2 points scored if the ball is successfully crossed in and they score a goal from a first time finish. If ball goes out it restarts with the coach.

Progressions

  • Defenders can track the runners entering the scoring zone.
  • Defenders can enter the channels to prevent the neutral getting to the pocket and delivering the cross
  • Remove the neutrals have a player from each team in each channel (1v1 in the channels - channel players can only defend each other and no additional players allowed in).
  • All players start in the middle area with player's making a run to get into the crossing channel to perform a cross
Coaching Points
  • Get your head up before crossing (to see what targets are available)
  • Deliver the ball quickly (2 touches or less)
  • Deliver the ball with pace (strike through the ball)
  • Deliver the ball using a variety of techniques (inside of the foot/laces)
  • Deliver the ball so it curves away from the goal keeper and towards the runners
  • Aim for a target (team mate's feet or pocket of space for running team mate)
