Function (20 mins)

Organisation

Half of Pitch used with both touch lines slighlty narrowed by 5 yards

 15 Players used

Working with the Reds set up with 3 CMF playing 2 holding and 1 attacking and 3 Strikers

Blues set up in a 4-3-1 Formation - Midfield 3 set up with 1 holding and two attacking

The Striker is used as a target player and is only allowed in the Centre Cirlce past the Half way Line.

 Balls Start With the GK

Reds drop off 5-10 for two reasons

 1. Realism

2. Set a Trap

To prevent the blue team passing out from the back and passing the ball to the feeder / number 9 using a 3-3 formation.

 Key coaching point:

'Make the pitch as small as possible'

Begin with the blue team in possession, playing with a back 4; 1 holding midfield player and 2 midfielders. They are trying to get the ball to their target player

Reds play with front 3 and midfield 3. If reds win possession they try and score within 8

seconds.

 Other possible conditions:

 score within 6 passes

or

put a retreat line when the ball is with the GK/ Shaded pitch Area/ Red Cones

Reds must drop off behind the retreat line when the ball is with the GK

 Defending key points:

 - Pressure on the ball: when / where / who / how?

 - Communication

 - Angles and distances of support

 - Compact and narrow shape

- Tracking runners

 - Decision making

 - Triggers

key Factors

The number 9 begins the press, trying to force the CB in possession of the ball to pass it wide to a FB. They must then remain close enough to that CB so they cannot receive the ball back from the FB. In our illustration, the ball is passed to the LB.

The WMF (number 7) presses the FB in possession, but alert to the position of the red CMF (shown as number 8) so that the ball cannot be passed into their feet.

If the FB receives the ball, we want to push them inside into where it is congested with players (or if near the touchline, show them outside to use that as an extra defender).

The opposite WMF (number 11) moves infield in to make the pitch smaller, and prevent any potential pass from the FB to the furthest CB or to the WMF they were originally marking.

The number 10 must press the DLM (shown as number 4), and be positioned slightly to their right shoulder in order to potentially intercept any pass made to them from the FB, and also quickly press the number 8 if needed.

The CMF (number 6) is pressing close to their CMF (shown as number 8). it depends on how the WMF (number 7) has pressed the FB to see where they should be positioned (left / right shoulder).

The other CMF (Number 8) provides cover behind the number 10.

If all of the red team fulfil their roles, then the only passing option for the FB in this function is back to the GK or a long cross field pass to the far sided WMF. This is risky for the blue team, but what the red team want to try and force the blue team to do.

- All players must work hard together, and try and win ball back within 8 seconds

- If players don't recognise the triggers and allow the blue team an easy passing option, they must work hard to recover.

There are a number of 'What if's' such as:

- What if the ball is passed back to the GK from the FB and then passed to the free CB? What new positions do the red team take?

- What if the ball is passed directly into the feet of one of the CM's from the CB's in a straight line?

- What if the GK passes the ball to a CB and the CF is not able to press them?

4-2-3-1; etc? How do their responsibilities change?

SSG (20 mins)

SSG

3/4 Pitch Practice

9v9

Blues set up 4-3-1

Reds Set up 2-3-3

Tapered off at one end due to no FB'S for the Reds and no wingers for the Blues

In a 11 v 11

Blues would be set up in a 4-3-3 (1 holding CMF)

Reds would be set up in a 4-3-3 (2 holding CMF)

Coaching the Reds

Coaching the red team to see if they can implement what was coached during the function and the pressing they have to do as a unit.

Remember to effect all players on the red team, as 2 CB's and a GK have been introduced.

Condition the game for realsism and being allowed to go in and coach

Conditions - Reds must score within 6 passes or 8 seconds

The condition must be realistic and allow the blue team to practice pressing from the front with their 3 CMF and 3 Strikers

Allow for transitions and time to play - make it look like a match as much as possible
