4v4 with Neutral Zone - Animation (20 mins)
Instructions:
4v4 with neutral zone to goal
Defenders must not enter the neutral zone
One forward can check into the neutral zone unopposed to receive ball
Progressions:
Defender can follow into the neutral zone
One player from defending half can join attacking half after neutral zone combination
Attacking Coaching Points:
Entry balls and timing into neutral zone with and without the ball is important. Arrive in this area as the ball does too.
Body orientation of receiving player should open (facing play) that protects the ball from defender but allows you to play forward with next movement.
Timing of 3rd man run into attacking half happens after the person in the neutral zone receives the ball. If the angle to receive is available and the space is there then time the run to receive as you reach the space. Passer should disguise pass but it should be weighted that it allows the 3rd runner to receive in her/his stride.
If the 3rd player run isn’t an option straight away then be aware that playing into striker and then into the space for supporting run is an option too. Same principles of timing apply.
Defending Coaching Points:
Avoid being split with passes by communicating who will press, who will provide support and who will cover spaces. Supporting defenders must be aware that should a team mate be beaten they must be close enough to make a tackle.
As play goes into the neutral zone a defender must at least go along to the nearest point of pressing to screen a forward pass through the middle of her/his team.
Try to read the 3rd player run and cut that passing option off. Force away from middle of field.
In transition look to go forward quickly if the opportunity to attack is available however if this isn’t an option then retain possession.
