Description

Attacking Wave Game

  • This practice is a full-width, half-pitch attacking wave game to goal that focuses on two phases of the game: a 4v2 counter-attack and a 6v4 phase of organised possession.
  • This practice begins with a 4v2 counter-attacking situation. The coach (C) has served to the deepest-positioned attacker, who is joined by two wide players and a forward in a 4v2 against two defenders.
  • As the 4v2 attack plays to completion – either with a goal or the ball going out of play – the coach serves a second ball to two players (A) who were uninvolved in the first phase of the practice. This is the cue for the two defenders (B), previously positioned next to the goal, to become active. This game now becomes a 6v4.
  • As each phase concludes, players move back to their original start positions.
  • Players’ roles can be changed as the coach sees fit.

Coaching Detail - Attacking Transition

Fast Counter-Attack

Emphasis is placed on the speed of the attack in the 4v2 scenario; players should not hesitate in exploiting the 4v2 overload.

Finding the spare players with accurate, well-weighted passes that do not cause the attack to lose momentum is crucial.

Coaching Detail - In Possession

Patient Circulation

In the 6v4 scenario, players are encouraged to move the ball from side to side and show a high level of patience as they control possession.

This has the effect of shifting the opposition’s defensive unit to one side in order to then be able to exploit their weak side with a quick switch of play. Equally, by circulating the ball quickly, gaps between the opposition defensive players will likely appear.
