In this SAP session, players will be exposed to a range of 1v1 defending scenarios. This session will be delivered using the 'Gamesology' Framework.

Key Coaching Words:
- Surfboard/skateboard - encourage standing ‘side-on’ to block direct line to goal
- Challenge - encourage a challenge for the ball when a heavy touch is taken
Suggested equipment list: 20 cones, 12 balls, 2 sets of bibs, 2 goals or 4 portable poles

Explanation:
• Divide squad into 2 equal teams. E.g. 6v6 for a squad of 12 players
• Teams to play regular game of football free of any conditions.
• Place balls around perimeter of the pitch for quicker re-starts
• All re-starts to reflect the real game, for example, throw-ins, corners, goal kicks, etc.

Explanation:
• Split participants into 2 equal teams and 2 GKs.
• Split teams evenly and position team-mates diagonally facing each other
• GK starts play by passing to their team-mate on the same end
• Black defender to engage in 1v1 duel from opposite end
• Attacker attempts to beat defender in 1v1 duel and score vs GK
• If defender wins the ball, they can attack the opposite goal
• Next ball is played from opposite GK after each attempt. Repeat.
Variations/Progressions:
• 2 balls (Chaos Game)
• Attacker & defender to start from different angles & distances
• Reward: 1 point for a goal to the attacker and 1 point for GK for every save made, 2 points for defender to win the ball and score in opposite goal
• Restrict: When the defender is permitted to apply pressure. Delay it to make it harder for the defender.
• Relate: 2v1 duels or 2v2 duels

• Split players into pairs with each player having a ball and dribbling with the ball inside the area
• The coach will call out a colour (red or black) and those players are 'it' and attempt to tag their partner from the other colour to gain 1 point
Scoring system, progressions and variations:
• Reward: If a player manages to keep the ball during this period without getting tagged, they receive 2 points.
• Restrict: Defenders must tag whilst maintaining control of their own ball
• Relate: Defending players permitted to challenge for the ball and leave their own ball
• Option to play this tagging game without a ball then progress it to incorporate a ball

Early Arrivals
Organisation:
• Create small squares outside the main playing area for early arrivals
• 3v1 rondos (guide only)
Explanation:
• As players filter in, organise them into 3v1 rondos (option to modify numbers)
• Reward: 1 point for defender to win the ball within 6 seconds; 1 point for attackers by making 6 successful passes. Each player keeps score
• Restrict: First pass is free! Defender cannot intercept
• Relate: Swap roles as soon as defender wins the ball
