Description

Playing Philosophy:

Attack and be aggressive- We don’t sit back and hope that victories will come to us. As a team we must be willing to take some chances during a game. It is far better to lose by attacking teams with everything you’ve got, rather than to sit back and let losses happen.

Out of possession- We expect all the players to run, pressing our opponent hard to regain possession. We manage our press and don’t press for press sake. We press with a purpose, to get that ball higher up the field, as close to our opponent’s goal as possible.

In possession- we don’t see backs of heads, we all confident and want the ball. From back to front we play ‘total’ football. We become masters of the 5/10 yard passing, pass and pass, make the ball do the hard work. Every pass creates a new image of the pitch. We look after the ball, its gold dust, we don’t have possession turned over cheaply.

Work outside your comfort zone- We promote players extending the comfort zone in which they operate. First and foremost, we want to see the players control the controllables within the game, to play simple, but we will encourage them to ‘try it’ and express themselves within the game be creative and take the game to our opponent.

Respect- Play the game from the start-finish, and do it with class, poise, and composure every single time. Conduct yourselves with professionalism and respect for all others involved in the game. We win with pride, passion and respect, we lose with dignity.

Have Belief – We instill belief in the individuals in the dressing room and the belief of them as a collective team to compete and leave a playing impression on any team we may face.

Team Cohesion- All individuals within the first team to pull together as one to achieve targets set out at the start of the season. No one player will carry us to success, every squad player has an equal responsibility to ensure the team targets are met and therefore it is imperative we have a dressing room which is willing to fight for one another. Otley Town want to transform the group from a mere collection of talented individuals into a highly cohesive unit so that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

4-4-2 Formation

This is a brief insight as to the player responsibilities for the way I want our 4-4-2 formation to be played, in and out of possession.

Out Of Possession

'AREA's'. Highlight the channels/areas of responsbilities for each position. We want to keep our shape, shifting from playing wide in possession and pulling in compact when out of possession.

This isn't a zonal system, the areas are a mere guide as to where players will prodimantly operator, ie we wont habe LB3 in area 4 as our shape will be lost.

Out of possession the team is to work narrow, minimising the gaps in between our lines which can be broken through by an opponenent. To simply our movements the field is seperated into 4 'Area's' this also gives the player an area of responsibility

Goalkeeper

- Starting position relative to the position of the ball and in line with the ball.

- Sweeper/keeper when the defence pushes up.

- Shot stopping - ready position, decision whether to catch/parry or punch. React to 2nd chances.

Fullbacks:

No 2 & 3 (LB3 working in Area 1 & 2, RB2 working in Area 4 & 3)

- Try to be close enough to the opposition wide player to pressure their first touch.

- Try to show opponents on the outside/ the line. Jockey runs rather than diving into our challenges.

- Marshall your winger so that defensively you are not sold short. Miminse the opponents opportunity to attack 2v1. Also on defending throwins, make sure closest mans toes are taken for no cheap return to the thrower.

Centre Backs:

No 5 & 6 (LCB6 working in Area 2 & 3, RCB5 working in Area 3 & 4)

- Recognise when to follow opponents short and when to hold your position.

- Be comfortable playing 1v1 and 2v2, practice marking goalside and ball side.

- When full backs show wide, move deep and centrally to defend crosses.

- Natural playing position to be positive, be comfortable managing the space behind with the help of the keeper

Centre Midfielders:

No 4 & 8 (CM4 working in Area 1,2,3 , CM8 working in Area 2,3,4)

- Try to develop an understanding with your midfield partner so that when one joins the attack, the other holds in a defensive role.

- Play a high pressure game in midfield, try to intercept passes.

- Break up the opposition play.

- Try to force the opposition to play wide or backwards.

- Be vocal in leading the midfield pack. Pull the wingers in tight to narror spaces between which opponents could cheaply penatrate.

Wide Midfielders / Wingers

No 7 & 11 (LW11 working in Area 1 & 2, RW7 working in Area 3 &4)

- Provide defensive cover in wide areas, pin the FB back.

- Stop opposition crosses.

- Track wide players.

Centre Forwards:

No9 & No10 (Working high across the 4 Area No10 working in the whole behind)

- Try to make play predictable.

- Force the CB to play risky passes.

- Try to prevent the ball going into midfield

In Possession

In possession. Make the pitch as wide as possible giving passing angles and pulling the oppositions shape with our movement.

Goalkeeper

- Distribute early with accurate kicks, throws and rolls.

- Support defenders when they have the ball and be prepared to receive on either foot.

- Communicate with outfield players. Early decisions and clear, purposeful instructions.

Fullbacks:

No 2 & 3 (LB3 working in Area 1 & 2, RB2 working in Area 4 & 3)

- Try to get on the ball from the Goalkeeper.

- Recognise when to get forward to support the attacking play and when to stay back.

- Look for forward passes which break lines.

- Link up with your sided midfield player, giving overlap options.

- Look to take quick throw-ins on your side of the pitch.

- Recognise when to come inside with or to receive the ball.

Centre Backs:

No 5 & 6 (LCB6 working in Area 2 & 3, RCB5 working in Area 3 & 4)

- Be prepared to receive the ball from the goalkeeper.

- Try to play angled passes behind the opposition. Play sharp, quick passes to FB & CM.

- Attack aerial balls with power, purpose & timing.

Centre Midfielders:

No 4 & 8 (CM4 working in Area 1,2,3 , CM8 working in Area 2,3,4)

- Try to create space to receive the ball but be prepared to take it in tight situations.

- Try to receive the ball sideways on, allowing you to have the option to run, pass or dribble forwards.

- Try to make passes which break lines to forwards or wide midfield players.

Wide Midfielders / Wingers

No 7 & 11 (LW11 working in Area 1 & 2, RW7 working in Area 3 &4)

- Play high against the opposition full backs and threaten the space behind.

- Provide accurate crosses when high up the pitch.

- Recognise when to dribble or play quick combinations.

- Try to be available to receive the ball at all times.

Centre Forwards:

No9 & No10 (Working high across the 4 Area No10 working in the whole behind)

- Recognise when to shoot with power & precision.

- Show for passes into feet and receive on the half turn.

- When play is developing in wide areas, find space between defenders to attack crosses.

- Recognise how to work as a pair (one up, one off - never on the same line).
