PART ELEMENT
Teams split to create two sectional rondos with a 3 v 2 within the zone and 3 players on the outside edges making a 5 v 3 in each area.
1. The ball starts with the goalkeeper initially whom is looking to find one of their two team mates within the zone.
2. The objective for the defending team is to prevent the pass in and adopt a body shape that forces the goal keeper to pass out to the winger (tactically this would be acceptable for how we play).
3. The 3 defenders now need to cover their distances and screen to prevent a pass in towards the midfielders or forward to the opposition 9.
COACHING OBSERVATIONS
Based upon individual players
1. Their starting position in relation to the ball, opposition and team mates
2. Their tactical decisions around when they apply pressure, direction they force play (see player 8)
3. Their application of the defending principles resulting in interceptions, spoiling and delaying play
COACHING OBSERVATIONS
Based upon the Unit (5, 7 and 8)
1. Pressure the first touch
2. Reduce options (eg force Goalkeeper to play to winger)
3. Encourage mistakes
4. Staying compact as a unit
5. Squeezing as a unit
6. Denying space behind
7. Positioning between ball and goal
8. Pressure not possible (how far the unit lets the player travel before engaging)
*Players will rotate to keep the intensity of the session and a drinks break may be taken in order to speak to players/units/full group
*Progression may include allowing defenders to press attackers outside of the zone (pressuring the first touch and to force mistakes)

WHOLE - PART 1
Based upon the primary unit of 4, 7, 8 and 11. Session starts as an open game to gauge the understanding of players with regards to their roles in defending the middle third. Resets are played from the yellow goalkeeper.
Session built upon the 5 W's
1. Session starts with a zoned game with players locked into their thirds
2. Ball starts with the goalkeeper with a condition of low passing applied to them
3. A team condition is applied stating that the ball must be passed through the thirds
COACHING OBSERVATIONS
Can the first defender deny space by...
1. Being aware of their starting position
2. Shutting down (speed and angle of approach)
3. Sitting down (getting low and approaching side on)
4. Slowing down (deceleration)
5. Staying down (keeping low and side on)
6. Showing down (forcing opposition player away from the danger zone/centre midfield)
