An outletting drill for the defense
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Hockey images.
Essence:
Outletting from the defense
Structure:
- With a 4-3-3 formation, we have 4 defenders at the back, set them up with the right half being slightly higher than the 25 yard line.
- Player A starts with the ball, he passes to B who will pass to C, that player will pass back to player A who in turn will pass to player D.
- Once player D has the ball he has the option to pass to one of the midfielders (E)
- Player D continues his run down the line and receives the ball back from E
- Player F will make the run to the side line to recieve a pass from D
- Player F will pass the ball to the run of G on the baseline
- Player H is in a posistion to potentially receive a pass from player F or G
Variations:
- The same drill can be repeated on the left hand side channel, with the players making similar runs.
Technical pointers:
- Make sure that when we are outfitting from the back, that the passes are hard and accurate to the open stick
- When making the leading runs, do it late and hard to create more space and time on the ball

Essence:
Outletting from the defence
Structure:
- 4 players at the back, player A passes the ball to the post up from player B
- Player B receives the ball and passes it back to A
- A quickly passes it to C who in 2 touches will hit the ball down the line to the coned box
- Player D makes the run and recieves the ball into the box, as he's received the ball the run from E to the baseline should begin.
- Player E receives the ball on the baseline and has 2 options, the pass to the run of F for deflection or the pass to the D at the top of the circle for a shot
Variations:
- The same can be repeated at the right hand side
- If the first option down the line isn't available recycle the ball until the opportunity arises for the hit down the line
Technical pointers:
- Make sure the ball is moved quickly and accurately
- Limit it to 2 touches to improve speed
- Make sure the posts up the strikers are late to create the most time and space for themselves on the ball

Essence:
Outletting from the defense
Structure:
- Set up the 4-3-3 formation and the centre midfielder, B makes a 5-10 yard run to post up for the ball.
- He can either pass the ball back straight to A or if there isnt a opponent on him, roll out and pass to C
- C can pass it down the line to E or the post up from D
- If the ball gets played back to A he can pass it to F who has 2 options
- He can pass to the post up from G or down the line to H
Technical pointers:
- Make sure the post up by B,D and G is into the space. If they are already in space to receive the ball, then they are standing in the wrong place. Make sure they go away and lead hard into that space for the ball.
- The player should have already made a decision which pass he is going to make before he gives it; to ensure that the ball is passed quickly to eliminate the opposition

How to set up the press
Essence:
- A forward press line on the 25 yard line.
Structure:
- We set the 3 forwards in a way where they block of a direct pass from the defense forward to the centre midfield, inside forwards or high forwards.
- The yellow line with no arrow head represents, the passes that are covered by the forward line.
- If the ball does manage to get through the forward line, then the inside forwards cover the pass through. Hence the W shape between the 5 players.
- The only option that the opposition have is a pass either to the deeper centre back or the half back.
- If this happens, then the forward line and inside forward line shift to the block the direct pass through the midfield
