Progression 2 - Overlapping runs & combination play
Player A at both ends has ball
B starts sequence by checking wide and away from mannequin
A passes to B in wide position (#1)
A makes overlapping run (#2) while B receives on the front foot and dribbles inside mannequin (#3)
Once inside, B plays ball into C (#4) who lays off for A on the overlap (#5)
A receives and plays one touch back to C who starts sequence in opposite direction
Sequence occurs simultaneously in both directions
COACHING POINTS:
Wide player gets away from mannequin and is side on, not face on - not predictable!
Play with front foot (away from simulated defender), dribbles with leg furtherest from defender
Look over shoulder before receiving
Overlapping player times run correctly, not a job, use change of pace
Alternate directions!
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Progression 3 - create overlapping or underlapping runs with combination
Player A at both ends has ball
B starts sequence by checking wide and away from mannequin
A passes to B in wide position (#1)
B receives on the front foot while side on (#2).
Instead of alternating role, player not working as B becomes defender, Player D
When B receives, they have a choice, turn inside where D (#3a) doesn't follow OR turn outside and dribble past D (#3b)
If B goes inside, A overlaps (#4a)
If B goes outside, A makes central run (#4b)
B plays to C (#5) who lays off to A (#6), A returns to C to restart sequence the opposite way
COACHING POINTS:
Wide player gets away from mannequin and is side on, not face on - not predictable! Needs to create options to go forward.
Play with front foot (away from simulated defender), dribbles with leg furtherest from defender
Look over shoulder before receiving
Overlapping player times run correctly, not a job, use change of pace
Alternate directions!

Players side on with options?

Two players simulate wide players - they start even with mannequin
Player A at both ends has ball
B starts sequence by checking wide and away from mannequin
A passes to B in wide position (#1)
A makes overlapping run (#2) while B receives on the front foot and dribbles inside mannequin (#3)
Once inside, B plays through ball into path of A (#4) who plays first time to Player C (#5)
Sequence occurs simultaneously in both directions
COACHING POINTS:
