Technical - dribbling at angles performing a feint technique at each cone, then attacking next cone on an angle. On left side is how I start them off (each with a ball, player waiting goes as soon as first player has gone past 1st cone etc). On the right side I have shown how I progress it to a race (2 players start on 1 end, 1 on the other side, all with a ball still). Can have 3 or 4 channels occupied, depending on numbers.
Have them start off slowly with lots of smaller touches between cones and a quick execution of the chosen technique with a bit of acceleration after, then slow down again (changing speeds). Really get them to focus on technique first, speed second.
Instruction points :
- close control dribbling (pigeon-toed)
- changing speeds
- see the SPACE/use your SKILL/attack with SPEED
- timing of technique in relation to cone (1.5 steps away at closest)
- sell the feint as much as possible! (exaggeration)
- weight on one leg, head/shoulder dropped, both feet on 1 side of ball, touch away with outside of foot
- "skating" motion

1v1's face on to angled gates. Note - this is all using same set up template from last portion, just putting big orange cones where smaller cones were. Can set up quickly this way. Have players play tag for a bit to begin. Watch how they will naturally use a feint to wrong foot a defender and get past them. Watch how they will pay attention to defender's movements with eyes, use stutter steps & change of speeds & deception with weight transfer and head/shoulder dropping. Have players watch for a bit and ask them what information attacker is taking in (defender's momentum and weight transfer). See the SPACE (defenders movements, space to invade behind/beside), use your SKILL (rewarding of use of specific technique), attack with SPEED (changing speeds to get separation from defender). 1 point for dribbling through a gate under control, 5 points for succesful use of techniques practiced earlier (side step, scissors). Switch after a couple minutes.
Instruction points :
- dribbling at angles to both use defender's momentum against them and create space to exploit
- changing speeds
- exaggeration of technique to fool defender
- defender's movement dictates which side to attack, be brave and proactive

SSG to wide gates. Points scored for dribbling under control through wide gates. 5 points for siuccesful use of earlier techniques and scoring, 1 point for succesful use to go past a player. If possibly, try to make space as large as possible with reduced numbers to afford exploration off the dribble. When players want to pass the ball with no pressure, make them explore space off the dribble first to commit defenders. Can match players up based on abilities, having only those players being able to tackle each other, allowing more freedom. Can also not allow tackling to allow more freedom as well.
Instruction points :
- close control dribbling
- looking to invade using the outside of foot (watch how many will use inside and defender touches it)
- see the SPACE/ use your SKILL/ attack with SPEED
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
SSG to goals. Pitch is divided into 3rds. Have to dribble in to scoring zone to go to goal. Forces more dribbling/passing/receiving before striking on goal. Can reward for successful use of a side step or scissors as well.
Instruction points :
- reinforce all earlier points
- attacking dribbling is a mindset : have to brave in the 1v1!

Warm up (10 mins)
Warm up - tag variation. All players have a ball. Taggers have ball IN THEIR HANDS and try to tag players below the waist (constraining their movement). Taggers keep track of how many players they tag in 30-45 seconds. Players who get tagged have to leave space and perform 5 ball manipulations (toe taps etc) and then return to space. Rotate taggers after each round until all have had an opportunity.
Instruction points :
- close control dribbling (pigeon-toed)
- changing speeds
- see the SPACE (boundaries, taggers, other players)
- how can you avoid and make the taggers miss you?
