Description

This passing practice can be used as an activation in a lighter session. It begins with a focus with a basic combination in a central area before building into movement off the ball without changing the central players. Finally, based on triggers the pass in, the set and the pass out. Players are challenged to all become the central player by rotating in at the right time.

Dynamic Warm Up

  • Bands
  • Squats 10 reps
  • Bend knees and knee inside and out 10 reps
  • Sidewards walk 10 reps
  • Groin open/close x5 each leg

  • 3 monster walks in, 3 monster walks out.

Band around ankles

  • Straight leg kick back, side and up in front 10 reps
  • Hamstring straight back leg 10-12

 

 

Dynamic Activation 50-60% effort

·       Light Jog x 2

·       Arm Circles skipping

·       Arms alternating skipping

·      High knees

·       Heels

·       Open Gates

·       Close Gates

·       Kick out in front

·       Kick across body

·       Front lunge – body twist

·       Side steps - 2 to the right, 2 to the left- down low

·       Walking calf stretch

.      Walking Quad stretch

 

Static Stretching 3 mins

·       Players own. Check in with players, confirm numbers. Adjust session to suit

 

Increase intenstity - 80% effort

·      Run forward 3/4 pace

·      High skips

·       Headers

·     On spot fast feet - sprint straight, right, left, behind to sprint x 1 : wait on call 'go'

Rotations (5 mins)

Method : Central combinations and developing rotations.

 

Two active players in the middle. 

 

Players in the middle to work for 1 min before changing with outside. One player receives a ball from the outside player, who then sets to the other middle player, who plays to the player on the opposite side. 

Player receiving the ball drops deep into the pocket the far side of the outside player passing the ball

 

 Inside roles reverse after 1 minute - communication here is key

Coaching Points :

  • The ball should never stop dead in the middle, this means that the weight of pass must be good for the passing player to play out.
  • Scanning and awareness are key for both the setting player and player who plays out. Body positioning must be good
  • Energetic, composed and precise - weight of pass, timing, communication

Rotations 2 (5 mins)

Method: 

 

Progression :

 

Players in the middle to work for 2 min before changing with outside. 

One player receives a ball from the outside player, then sets to the other middle player, who plays to the outside spare player. 

The player follows their pass and runs around the outside player they have passed to.

 The player who received the pass from the outside plays the central spare player again who sets the player running back in to play to the outside

 

Coaching Points

  • The ball should never stop dead in the middle
  • Scanning and awareness are key for both players on the inside
  • They must prepare their body posiston to receive with respect to where the next actions are.
  • Energetic, composed and precise - weight of pass, timing, communication

Possession Game - 4+4v4v4

Method

  • Area: 30 x 25 metres grid
  • 4v4 inside the area, wall players on the outside. 
  • When In possession 8 v 4. 
  • Wall players can only move up and down along their line and cannot be tackled
  • 2 touch on the outside
  • Can progress onto when a pass is played to wall player they come into area and are replaced by an inside player

 

 

 

Coaching Points

 

 

  • Quality of pass – pace, weight and accuracy
  • Individual movement to receive pass, open body shape, looking to play forward.
  • Pass to feet or space? Players decision making
  • Passing triangles – always at least two options for player on the ball
  • Play in between and behind players
  • Communication between players - 'player on' / 'turn out' / 'one two' etc

 

2 x 4 minutes - 1 minute in between

 

Outside players switch out after every break

Cool Down

Organization:

Line up all players on goal line. Begin with light jog to following touchline and back.

 

Method:

Introduce arm/leg movements alternating with light jog.

Finish with static stretching.

Aim to reduce heart rate back to resting rate and to stretch muscles to remove lactic acid build-up

Review the session - Encourage re-hydration and nutrition
