Youth Decision Making Play - Training Plan 1 - Scanning
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Area: 2 x 2 square, with 3-5 meter passing lane (A & B) designated cone colours at positions B, coulor coded to each side of position C (in this case red and blue), replicate base on number of players.
Players:5 -15+ players, 5-6 players in each grid
Explanation: Player C starts by calling for a pass from Player A at the same time running into the square to receive a pass from Player A. Player A passes into Player C weighted to receive in the square. Player C passes back to Player A and moves forward beyond the square towards Player A to bump pass with Player A. Player C then retracks back deep into the square scanning the second Player C to see which colour cone they are standing behind, this dictates to the initial Player C which Player B they then take a touch and pass to ( the second Player C only positions themselves behind one or the other colour cone after the initial Player C has moved off to combine with Player A, so that the intial Player C has to scan to determine which Player B to pass to). Player B passes back to Player C who takes a touch and passes back to Player A, Sequence then restarts with second Player C calling for and moving off to the passing sequence with Player A. Initial Player C returns to C position behind one of the colour cones to dictate which Player B the second Player C plays to. repeat for 45 seconds then rotate players.
Coaching Points: First touch out of feet ( but touch must stay in square), middle of ball (low or high on the ball will make it bobble), short pass timing/weight/accuracy. Take touch off back foot. Open hips to allow first touch into the direction of the next pass.

Set Up: - playing area Size 10m x 10m - Equipment; 2 x mini goals, markers, balls
Players: Players 4-6 per grid (2 or 3 pairs different bib colours)
Explanation: Coach feeds balls in from one line (without goals). One pair is positioned at the mini goals, other two pairs are positioned in each corner. Coach plays into one of the players positioned at the goals ( in this case A). That Player (A) takes a touch and passes to their team mate (bounces, as team mate must play a first touch pass back) , once Player A takes their intial touch one of the corner players positioned at the end Player (A) came from can enter the area to engage 1 v 1. Player A must scan for who has entered the area and take a touch from their teammates pass away from that pressure to the player in the opposite corner, if Player A does this correctly their team mate can enter the area to create a 2 v 1 and try to score in the goal at the end Player (A) originally came from. If Player (A) incorrectly passes to the wrong corner the second defender can come in to create a 2 v 1 against Player (A) tyring to win the ball and score, Player (A) can bounce off the other three players (who can not enter the area)
Step Up: • one touch passes
Step Down: • increase size of area

Set Up: - Size 20m x 20m - Players 12-16 - Equipment; 2 x normal goals, 8 markers, 6 balls
Explanation: two teams of 6 or 8, 3v3 or 4v4 in the area, three or four bounces at each teams attacking end/sides. Play starts with one team transitioning the ball from their defensive end to their attacking end, they must bounce off a side and end player before being able to score. Once a team scores all the internal players move instantly transition to the bouncer positions and the bouncers transition into the area to play, bouncers from the team that scored moving in quickly retreive a ball from their defensive end to restart play.
Coach Cues; focus on scanning, apply penalties to players who do not scan before receiving a pass, quick tranistion from bounces to open play, pass on move/support, bounces one touch pass if possible

Decision Making Play - SI1 - Scanning (5 mins)
Area: 2 x 2 square, with 3-5 meter passing lane (A & B) designated cone colours at positions B, coulor coded to each side of position C (in this case red and blue), replicate base on number of players.
Players:5 -15+ players, 5-6 players in each grid
Explanation: 1. Player C starts by calling for a pass from Player A at the same time running into the square to receive a pass from Player A. As Player C runs towards Player A they scan back at the second Player C to see which colour cone they are standing behind, this dictates to the initial Player C which Player A/B/C they then take a touch (2) and pass (3) to ( the second Player C only positions themselves behind one of the colour cones after the initial Player C has moved off to combine with Player A, so that the intial Player C has to scan to determine which Player A/B/C to pass to). In this case the initial Player C passes to Player D (blue cone) as the second Player C is standing behind the blue cone. Once Player C passes to and receives a pass (4) back from Player D the second Player C again stands behing any of the coloured cones to dictate where the next Player C touch and pass goes. Run for 45 second then rotate all the positions
Coaching Points: First touch out of feet ( but touch must stay in square), middle of ball (low or high on the ball will make it bobble), short pass timing/weight/accuracy. Take touch off back foot. Open hips to allow first touch into the direction of the next pass. Positioning of player in the square to allow scanning and the ability to pass to any of the free players.
