Objective

To improve the Goalkeepers technique in distribution using the hands.

 Session set up.

  • 25 yards x 25 yards grid marked off by 4 small goals in the corner as illustrated.
  • Goalkeepers start within the grid.
  • Footballs are placed on the outside of the grid.

Session:

  • Goalkeepers start within the grid with a ball and jog around.
  • The ball can be bounced or switched from hand to hand while jogging.
  • On the coaches command the GK uses an underarm throw, a javelin throw or an overarm throw ( Note 1 below) into one of the small goals.
  • GK then sprints to the outside to pick up another ball.

Coaching Points:

  • Encourage short sharp footwork.
  • Advise goalkeepers to be aware of their space.
  • Encourage proper distribution technique.
  • Accelerate and de accelerate while sprinting.
Progression:
  • Goalkeeper can move ball around waist and back of head while jogging ( Age and experience depending).
  • On coaches command the goalkeeper throws their ball in the air before distributing to the small goal.
  • On coaches command the goalkeeper bounces his/her ball and catches a different ball before distributing into the small goal.

Note 1:

Under arm throw:

  • Look at your target.
  • Hold the ball in the throwing hand.
  • Place the opposite foot forward pointing towards your target.
  • Step forward as if lunging.
  • Lower your body to the ground, back knee bent, and withdraw the ball back in your hand.
  • Bowl the ball alomg the ground and follow through with the throwing arm.
Over arm throw.
  • This is used to generate distance.
  • With proper technique the GK will achieve accuracy helping to keep possession.
  • The throwing arm holds the ball behind the body....non throwing arm will point in the direction we want the ball to travel.
  • The opposite foot will be placed forward.
  • sling the ball forward with the strong arm and allow the top of the arm to almost brush the ear.
  • Release the ball slightly early to generate height and slightly late if you want the ball to hot the ground with pace.
  • Follow through with the throwing arm pointing in the direction the ball is travelling.
Javelin throw:
  • The technique here is similar to how a javelin is thrown.
  • Designed for quickness in distribution.
  • The ball starts in the palm of the strong hand beside the head ( at the ear).
  • The ball is thrown straight forward as the keeper steps into the throw.
  • Power the throwing hand forward to get distance on the throw.
