Five Elements of a Training Activity: 

1.Organized: Is the activity organized in the right way? 

2.Game-Like: Is the activity game-like?  

3.Repetition: Is there repetition, when looking at the overall goal of the session? 

4.Challenging: Are the players being challenged? (Is there the right balance between being successful and unsuccessful?) 

5.Coaching: Is there effective coaching based on the age and level of the player?

Up to 3v3 (15 mins)

Objective: To dribble or pass past opponents, move the ball forward and score goals.

Organization: Set up two 10W yd x 15L yd fields with a goal at each end. As soon as players start to arrive, divide them up and get them playing. Free play for up to 15 minutes with a half time to switch up teams on fields.

Key Words: Dribble, look up, pass, shoot (Can the players use these words and not the coaches?)

Guided Questions: 1) What are your options when you have the ball? 2) When is it a good time to dribble? 3) When is it a good time to pass? 4) What can you do to find where the defenders are?

Answers: 1) Dribble, pass or shoot. 2) When there is space and no defenders around me. 3) When a teammate is open and a defender is near me. 4) Look up

Notes: During first break: Coach ask guided questions to players, allow players to continue to play to find answers

During second break: Players give coach and teammates answers from questions during first break

Police Patrol (15 mins)

Objective: Dribble using all parts of the foot and using both feet while put under light to medium pressure from defenders being introduced. 

Organization: 20yd W x 30 yd L field. Every player has a ball at their foot except for two players that are the police. Police run around like defenders to try and win the ball and then pass it out of bounds. Police have 1 minute to try and pass as many balls out as possible. Players that lost their ball to the police have to perform either; toe taps, foundations, in & outs, or sticky tape before returning(coaches discretion). 

Key Words: dribble, look up, COP, COD

Guided Questions: 1) How can you avoid the police? 2) How can you find where the police are not? 3) If being chased by the police, what type of dribble can you use to get away?

Answers: 1) Dribble away from the police where they aren't. 2) Look up and dribble into the open space. 3) Take a bigger touch into space and use COP.

1v1 to Goal (15 mins)

Objective: Improve players individual attacking and defensive abilities while playing 1v1 and going to goal. 

Organization: 10W yd x 15L yd field. Use both halves of the field if more players at practice. Try to keep lines short as possible to promote more playing time. Have ball start with attacker or have coach pass to attacker to work on receiving and going to goal as well. First to score wins their team a point. First to 5 points wins and then switch groups or sides.

Guided Questions: 1) What are your options when you have the ball? 2) If you dribble past a defender, what can you do after? 3) What can you do to find where the defender is?

Answers: 1) Dribble or shoot. 2) Dribble with COP or shoot. 3) Look up

Notes: Encourage the attacker to try and take on the defender face to face w/o turning their back to the defender. Encourage the players to try moves and be creative. If they make a mistake and lose the ball, try again until they find success.

4v4 Game (15 mins)

Objective: To dribble or pass past opponents, move the ball forward and score goals. 

Organization: Set up regular 4v4 game with two mini goals. Divide teams up into teams of four. Free play for up to 15 minutes with a half time to switch up teams on fields if necessary. If not possible, switch halves at half time.

Guided Questions: 1) What are your options when you have the ball? 2) When is it a good time to dribble? 3) When is it a good time to pass? 4) What can you do to find where the defenders are?

Answers: 1) Dribble, pass or shoot. 2) When there is space and no defenders around me. 3) When a teammate is open and a defender is near me. 4) Look up.
