Warm Up - Protect the Cones (5 mins)

Objective - Raise muscle temp/HR while introducing 1v1 actions

  • 1) Rondo with one central GK, small grid
  • 2) Outside servers circulate ball with feet, looking to knock over cones in centre
  • 3) Each GK goes for ~45s before rotating
  • 4) Give keepers the chance to stretch between reps

  • Low, compact set
  • Small, quick steps
  • Timing when to close down (slow pass, bad touch, etc)

Objective - Activate hand-eye while preparing spread movement

  • 1) GK (kneeling) takes central service from S1
  • 2) Keeper extends one leg into spread position
  • 3) S2 lobs ball near GK's toe, GK stretches to palm the ball back
  • 4) Repeat for other side
Coaching Points
  • Body weight forward, chest over ball
  • Sink hips/butt when doing the spread stretch, rather than bending back
  • Reinforce good handling habits

  • 2) Angled drop step for extension from central keeper
  • 3) Repeat for other side
Coaching Points 
  • Block shape - compact, weight forward, dropping knee on the inside of the goal
  • Snap into block from set position - maintain balance (if you are running you will end up on face)
  • Reinforce good extension habits

1v1 Activation - 2 GK Block & Smother (5 mins)

Objective - Progress block practice to a live ball, while working smother

  • 1) 2 GKs, set in front of and behind server
  • 2) Server steps to strike one of the stationary balls, GK mirrors movement and blocks
  • 3) Server touches unused ball into space for back GK to smother
  • NOTE - You don't have to strike the first ball you step to - use deception to make them stay balanced/on feet as long as possible
Coaching Points
  • Stay balanced and able to react as long as possible
  • Snap into block shape, bringing knee to heel
  • Tense body to maximize distance
  • Smother - head and hands to the ball, CALL KEEPER

1v1 Activity - Cues to Close or Hold w/Central Recovery (20 mins)

Objective - Introduce basic cues used for decision-making in short/mid range 1v1 scenarios

  • 1) S1 takes touch either toward or away from goal
  • 2) GK reads touch and decides whether to close space or maximize reaction time
  • 3) GK deals with shot (block/smother or reaction save)
  • 4) If shot isn't held, recover for central strike from S2 (server should take touch out of feet)
Coaching Points
  • Impact zone (~≤3m) - this is where we set low and compact, use block/spread technique. DO NOT USE BLOCK IF YOU ARE NOT IN IMPACT ZONE
  • Decision-making - if you can get within impact zone, close space. If you cannot, maximize reaction time
  • A very broad and general rule if they are struggling - touch toward goal, close. Touch away, hold or drop

Game - Strikers v Keepers w/Endzone and Target (20 mins)

Objective - Implement 1v1 actions/decisions in a competitive, random environment

  • 2v2 small sided game with endzones and halfway marked out
  • Defending team must use hands, attacking team must use feet
  • Score by scoring in mini-goal or dribbling into endzone
  • To begin, defending team must stay in own half (lift this rule as a progression)
  • Progression - can also score by hitting mannequin behind mini goal (makes GKs choose appropriate set based on distance)
Coaching Points
  • Communication - call ball when attacking it, talk to teammate to organize pressure/cover
  • Choice of set - low and compact in impact zone, more upright otherwise
  • Stay square to ball and on feet for as long as possible - small steps to adjust and stay up
