Simple 1v1 Dribbling Drill

Key Factors

  • The blue player passes to the red player
  • The red player is then the attacker and must dribble the ball through either of the red gates

Organisation

  • Once the play is dead the players should join the opposite line so that next time they are doing the opposite job
  • Ensure that the defender is closing the space quick enough to put pressure on the dribbler, but other than that do not concentrate too much on the defensive aspect of this drill
  • 7x7 yard squares

Progressions

  • Reduce the size of the gates
  • Move the gates over towards the defenders 

Coaching Points

  • Mechanics: Keep ball close, Vary surfaces of the foot, Head Up, Change of pace, Change of direction
  • Do not wait to be engaged by the defender, if they don't react quick enough use that change of pace and get to the gate.
  • Decision making - which gate to go for, can we take advantage of poor body position of opponents?
