Description

About this session…

Designed to focus on the 3 central midfielders in a 4-3-3 formation and their roles and responsibilities in possession. The coaching points listed are mostly concerned when in possession, but you could easily change them to defensive ones. The session aims to improve the team’s effective control of the midfield, linking the 3 lines, and create scoring opportunities.

Thought process for every player who gets the ball should be: 1. Can I score? 2. Can I assist? 3. Can I possess?

The role of the midfield 3 as a group:

-Should be in a triangle…

-Close enough together to combine with each other in order to…

-Link the 3 lines and move the ball from backs to forwards and…

-Support the forwards in the final 1/3 and…

-Support the player on the ball, looking to turn and play forward if possible

The role & responsibilities of the #6 (Defensive Midfielder)

-Check to the ball when the backs have possession, get the ball and look to combine forward

-Receive the ball facing forward, look to play forward to the #10, or #9, or look to the channels and play the #7 or #11, if not “on” combine with the #8

-Provide support to other players behind the ball

-Drop into the back line to allow back to make runs forward

-Look to switch the field of play

-When out of possession, provide defensive cover - primarily the #8

-When out of possession, screen the pass to the opposition’s striker

The role & responsibilities of the #8 (Center Midfielder)

-Support the #6 when they have the ball at an angle further up the field

-Receive the ball facing forward, look to play forward to the #10, or #9, or look to the channels and play the #7 or #11, if not “on” combine with the #6

-Support the #7, #11, #9, and #10 from behind, especially in the offensive 1/3, but do not get so close as to steal the space from the forwards

-Support wide play by the #2,#3 and the #7,#11

- Look to switch field of play

-Drop in to allow the #6 to run forward

-When out of possession, screen passes to the oppositions midfielders

-When out of possession, provide cover for the #10 and #9

The role & responsibilities of the #10 (Offensive Midfielder)

-Run off the #9 and look to receive ball. Run into spaces created by runs of the #9.

-Overlap the #9 when he has the ball and is stopped

-Do not steal space from the forwards by getting too close

-Receive the ball facing forward, look to play forward to the #9, or look to the channels and play the #7 or #11, if not “on” combine with the #8 and #6

-Support the forwards at an angle behind the ball, and the #6 and # 8 from an angle in front of the ball

- Look to switch field of play

-When out of possession, provide cover for the #9, #7, and #11

-When out of possession, screen passes to the oppositions midfielders

Other notes on this session…

When the ball is played out wide through the lines to our #7 & #11 does our opposite wide player #7 or #11), the #9 & #10 give supporting runs to score goals?

When the ball is played out wide through the lines to our #7 & #11 does the #2 & #5 offer support should there be no forward play available?

When the midfielders are in possession, does the back four offer support to keep possession?

Functional Training of Midfield 3 (20 mins)

Organization: Play 6v3 with the players shown, ideally you want your defensive 3 to also be central midfielders. For a full team run 2 groups.

Instructions: Ball always starts from goal keeper, and players in possession try to get the ball to the #9 (striker) for a point. Defensive team gets point by winning the ball and playing the ball to the keeper within 5 seconds for a 2 point goal, anytime for a 1 point goal.

Coaching Points: Decision making of ball movement by team. Quality of passes, movements to drag defenders to create space for another player, quality of movements and timimg of runs and passes. Player on the ball should always think 1. Can I get the ball to the #9? If no, then 2. Can I get the ball to someone else who can? If no, then 3. Can I possess with my other players?

Functional Training of Midfield 3 - Part 2 (20 mins)

Instructions: Make field wider and add 2 wide players for each team. Play same as above but now 8 v 5. Depending on numbers you could also add wide target forwards to play into for a point, or another central defender for the defensive team. If you have another GK, striker could play to goal for additional point if successful.

Coaching Points: Same as above but now make sure the midfield 3 support wide play, are in areas where they can turn out and switch the field of play. Make sure the midfielders are aware of how the defense moves when we have possession and the pockets of space to play in created by our ball movement in possession.

Big Goal vs. 2 Small Wide Goals (20 mins)

Organization: Play 9 v 6(7) to Big Goal. Ball always starts from coach position with a pass to one of the backs. If defense wins ball, they have 10 seconds to score in one of the wide goals. If unsuccessful, play is dead and new ball started from coach.

Instructions: Offensive team tries to combine to score. Can restrict with minimum number of passes before attempt on goal if desired. Keep score. Rotate players offense and defense.

Coaching Points: Same as above. Making the right decision to attack the goal, or possess. Move the ball and play in areas where we have a numbers up situation. Runs of #s 6, 8, 10 to support player on the ball.

Look for understanding of the roles of individual players in possession and out of possession!
