Topic: Shooting technique/Contact Plant Foot 

Activity: Partner Volleys

-Use both feet, practice toe down/ankle locked and balance

-Challenge: How many catches? Can you beat yesterday's score? 

-Super Challenge: 2 touch catch, or SUPER: 2 touch continuous volleys 

-BONUS CHALLENGE: 1/2 Volley's. Inside/Laces

Set Up: 

  • Players use field lines 3-5 yards apart
  • Players 2-3 yards apart
  • 1 touch volleying back and forth

Instructions:

  • Start with players volleying their own drop ball, their partner catching. Players are aiming for their partners hands. 
  • Progress to partner toss to volley--1/2 volley

Main Technical Coaching Points/Questions

  • Toe down, ankle locked
  • Contact on sweetspot
  • No spin or top spin (teach/show what top spin is)

Regressions/Progressions:

  • Challenge: 2 touch laces only, no spin or top spin.
  • Competition: Can you get to X number of catches without the ball hitting the ground in X amount of time?

Topic: Shooting technique, approach, follow through/land on kicking foot, HIPS, V Angle, Knee Snap

Activity: Partner Passing with laces

Set Up: 

  • Players 8-12 yards apart
  • 2 touch laces passing back and forth

Instructions:

  • Start with players striking the ball back and forth with laces on the ground focusing on approach first, and follow through, land on kicking foot . V Angle, Knee Snap. 

Main Technical Coaching Points/Questions

  • Plant foot should be LENGTH of your own foot away from the ball. 
  • Moving ball: In front of the ball
  • Dead ball: next to the ball 
  • Hips: Cues "Sassy Soccer Hips" or "Floss" (Lean towards plant foot)
  • Approach: At an angle
  • Back Swing: V Angle Knee Snap, the faster you snap, the more power you will get. "Toe to Ponytail/manbun"
  • Follow through: Land on kicking foot 

Regressions/Progressions:

  • Challenge: older players: can you make the ball skip once before getting to your partner. 
  • Challenge: older players: can you drive it in below the knees in the air (20-25 yards) no side spin
  • Challenge: drive it in, volley it/1/2 volley to self

Example: Everyone gets x attempts- who can score the most? OR How many goals can be scored and hit the back of the net in the air in x number of minutes?

1v1 then 2v2 Attacking (10-20 mins)

Activity: 1v1 transition

Organization:

  • Goals are place 10-20 yards apart (make it smaller if kids are tired)
  • Balls should all be at both sides with every player/team

Instructions:

  • Start the activity with coach throwing the ball in. Players from each side attack the ball and play 1v1 to goal
  • If one player scores they then defend the next attacker from the other team
  • If a player misses the goal and it goes over the end line same scenario
  • If a player kicks the ball out over the side line the opponents next attacker comes on with the ball!
  • Game is continuous
  • Teams compete against each other

Main Technical Coaching Points/Questions

  • Directional aggressive 1st touch
  • Commit the defender to enable you to beat them
  • Use a move to beat the defender
  • Accelerate once around the defender
  • Avoid the defender by playing quickly, dribble and shoot!

Advanced Coaching Points

  • How quickly can you shoot? Have you created a shooting lane? What are the laws of finishing? (LOW HARD ACROSS!!)

Regressions/Progressions:

  • Orange group: Just have 1 line attacking and 1 defending for a duration if players are struggling
  • PROGRESS TO 2v2 GAMES!
