Point 2. Striker successfully holds it up, and lays off to midfielder who is able to face weak side and find wide player within 2/3 touches.
Scenario 1. Defence is 'in shape' (outside defender has stayed inside - green box - and there isn't a gap to play between defenders) a through pass doesn't work here. We find our wide attacker. As soon as that pass is on it's way to being connected, outside back starts a sprint to run beyond with the overlap. Wide attacker goes forward also once the pass is made for a cut back at the top of the box.
All other players who were involved from attacking midfield or forward are inside the goal area in time for the cross.

Scenario 2. Opponent outside defender has moved across with our wide forward to cover the pass into them (moved into blue box). Midfielder on the ball who is shaping up to play the pass then can give information they'll play it in behind the back line for our forward to make the forward run.
All other players who were involved from attacking midfield or forward are inside the goal area in time for a cross or to follow up the shot/receive a pass.

Point 1. We have the ball in possession, middle third of the field. We want to be facing forward and our striker is open to receive a pass into feet (circled). Any player can find that pass into our striker. This example is the outside back but can be from centre back, or midfield.
When the ball goes in, supporting players must find 5-10 yards of space to be able to open up to the weak side.
Pass into striker, hold defender off!
When striker makes it stick with a first touch and holds defender off, wide forward really backs up quickly (running backwards and watching the shape of opponents to decide what to do once they get there) towards sideline - in diagram.
