The objective of this exercise is to work on 1v1s.
Purple A-Team tries to beat the Blue Team 1v1. The Purple A team tries to pass to the Purple B Team.
If the Blue Team intercepts the ball, the transition is made and then the Blue A tries to pass the ball to the Blue B Team
Coaching Points:
- Body Shape - Sideways
- Keep 1 arm's length away
- On a poor touch of the opposition, try and win the ball
- Be aware and quick to transition when you lose the ball
Progression:
1. You can use the A or B player on your team as a support player to pass to and then go to the back of the line
2. 1 pt if you can make the pass; 2pts if you can make it with the least amount of touches
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
The objective of this exercise is to work on 1v1s & 2v2s
2 Players from the Purple Team try to beat the Blue Team 1v1 (2v2). The Purple team must either dribble or pass and try to play the ball into one of the two red goals. If they succeed, the two defenders must go behind their line and 2 new challengers come on to attack the purple team.
If the Blue Team intercepts the ball, the transition is made and then the Blue team tries to score, and the purple team transitions right away on defense
You cannot have 2 players of the same color in the same section at the same time.
Coaching Points:
- Body Shape - Sideways
- Keep 1 arm's length away
- On a poor touch of the opposition, try and win the ball
- Be aware and quick to transition when you lose the ball
Progression:
1. You can now overload the side and have 2 players of the same team in one section
2. Add in a bouncer on either side who plays for both teams.

4v4+1v1
The field dimensions 45x40
4 Pug Nets
Two teams of 5 plus a goalie
The objective of the game is to work on ball movement within the middle but must use the wing before you can score.
The wing area:
Between the white and red lines in the shaded area
Only 1 player from each team may go in at a time.
When the ball is played in this area, it is a 1v1 both offensively and defensively.
The players may use the middle field to create a quick Give-n-Go; to keep possession and play the ball to a safe area to rebuild, or to progress the attack.
The winger cannot score
In the middle section:
4v4 and also looking at playing a little more man to man which leads to 1v1 challenges. Any player in the middle can score.
We are also looking at who can make the right decision as to where they are on the pitch, with or without the ball, etc.
The goalie:
They are used as a 6th player and must use their foot and not their hands. However, when the opportunity arises and it is a 1v1 with the goalie, they are allowed to dive and save the ball and/or use their hands.
The ball always starts with the goalies
Coaching Points:
Awareness:
Scanning the whole field with or without the ball
Reception:
Your first touch is away from danger and into open space
First touch being away from the opponent and on the safe side of your body
Open up and see the field
Body Shape:
Sideways in direction, you want the opponent to go
1 arm's length away
Movement:
Be quick to pick up the player closest to you in a defensive position
With the ball, use your body to make feints to beat the defender
Draw your defender away from the action
Use a feint to draw away to receive the ball
Communication
Progression:
1. A goal can only be scored if the next shot is directly from the winger
2. 3-touch possession of the ball
3. Each time there is a goal, a player on the defensive team is taken away. However, as soon as the defense regains possession, the player can re-enter the playing field
4.
