Screen 1

FROM THE GOALKEEPER AS A 2-2 FORMATION

  • We draw an imaginary line down the middle of the court.
  • If the GK has the ball, our pivot (BLUE 2 - highest player) block the middle line to prevent the ball being played directly into the opposition pivot (YELLOW 5)
  • We want to force them to play down the wings and NOT through the middle of the court
  • BLUE 4 must be offset central in relation to the centre line.
  • The other BLUES (3 & 5) players need to be central to protect the middle of the court until the ball is in motion

Screen 2

FROM THE GOALKEEPER AS A 2-2 FORMATION
  • GK plays the ball to Y2
  • B2 moves to Y2 to press the ball
  • B4 then moves to centre line to cover B2 but still has responsibility for Y4
  • B3 and B5 now need to mark more closely their direct opponents

Screen 3

FROM THE GOALKEEPER AS A 2-2 FORMATION
  • Y2 plays the ball back to Y4 and then Y2 drives through to the middle of the court.
  • B2 follows Y2 as they drive through
  • Y3 drops back in to offer support and B3 follows but maintains the middle area of the court not to get drawn out to the wider space as the ball is on the other side of the court
  • Y5 moves out wide and B5 tracks but doesn't need to get tight at this stage as the ball is far away and B5 can make that distance easily if the ball is played down the line

Screen 4

FROM THE GOALKEEPER AS A 2-2 FORMATION
  • Y4 plays the ball into Y5
  • B5 now presses Y5
  • B4 now drops deep even though Y4 is at the halfway line. This is to offer support to the other defenders.

Screen 5

FROM THE GOALKEEPER AS A 2-2 FORMATION
  • Y5 decided to play back to Y4
  • B4 now presses Y4 directly
  • As the ball is central, each player takes a position centrally in relation to their player

Screen 6

FROM THE GOALKEEPER AS A 2-2 FORMATION
  • Ball is played to Y2 and B2 presses.
  • Rest of BLUE players adjust accordingly. BLUE 4 again drops in behind to act as cover but is in a position to press Y4 if the ball is played back

It is essentially about controlling the space

We don't want the opposition playing through the middle of the court as this gives them better options

If we can force them to play down the wings then we have the side line as an 'extra defender' to force them out of play
