Theme: Using inverted wingers to create goal scoring opportunities or as part of the build up in wide areas.
Principles of play: Penetration, Movement, Support, Creativity (focal principles), Create space.

Primary Player: Wide player (7/11)
Primary Unit: 7/11, Midfielder (8/10) and Full back (2/3)
Organisation: Attacks continue to alternate between sides, 2/3 plays into the 8/10 who plays into 7/11. After the initial pass, the 2/3 makes an overlapping run, when the 7/11 receives the ball, they take a touch towards the goal & look to shot on goal around the "fullback pole".
Picture 2: Linking with overlapping full back or supporting midifelder to combine in different ways to create a chance in the box or score a curled shot from outside the box.
Progressions/ adaptations:
- Rotate players to give others opportunities in different positions.
- Encourage the three to combine in different ways
Coaching points/ pictures:
- 2/3 makes curved run out to in, near touchline - trigger after pass walk towards or slowly jog forward, as soon as midfielder plays the ball to winger, begin a sprint on the outside of winger to create space to disorientate
- 8/10 in half turn to receive on the back foot or allow the ball to roll across body to play in winger. Stay backwards of square (45 degress away) of the winger as the play maker.
- 7/11 - Head up before deciding to shoot, dribble or to link with supporting players.

Replace poles with a centre back and full back to give real pressure, Can use 2 goals next to each other to have simultaneous practises to ensure all players are involved.
Opposition management: Get the ball to one of the coaches or to the start poles.
Alternate players to give players a chance on different sides and in different roles.

1-4-3-3 (In possession) vs 1-4-4-2 (out of possession) - Ball starts with attacking team as the goalkeeper/ defensive midfielder (4) who feeds to full back and the play goes live. The attacking team are allowed 2 transitions, whereas the defenders are allowed 1. Encourage the full back to overlap, winger to cut in and the ball side midfielder to support the winger. Encourage the striker to stay between the goal posts and far side midfielder to attack the far post and opposite winger to attack far post also. Play offsides to ensure realism, record on ipad to show players pictures.
Secondary Unit: Opposite winger (11) & Striker (9) & opposite midfielder (10/8).
Opposition management: Can you counter to score/ run the ball into the poles.
- 9 weaves between defenders or runs across a defender at a forward angle to create space for winger to attack/ draw away defenders. Stay onside unless looking to solely create space for the winger to exploit.
11/7 goes towards the far post to recover crosses or rebounds (depending on 10/8 movement), 10/8 attacks penalty spot or far post (depending on striker movement)
Picture 3: Winger plays the ball to the striker who sets back into a more central area for a closer shot to goal to wrong foot the goalkeeper.
Picture 4: Winger plays in other players if they make a run between defenders if they have got their head up and a well timed or angled run has been made (chance creation).
Reinforce previous coaching points and pictures.
Adaptations/ progressions:
- if no second goalkeeper, use a "4" and have poled gates to run into instead.
- Continuous play with throw ins/ different start points.
- Use full width of the pitch and remove full backs, taper the space where the fullbacks would be, do the wingers have the same success?
- Encourage opponents to defend deep to restrict space or push up to play offside. Which tactic gave the attacking team more issues/ success?

Organisation: Split players into two groups in the wide areas. One of the wide players begin by travelling with the ball towards the "full-back" (pole) and after beating the pole by cutting inside, shoots towards the goal. Alternate attacks from each side. if enough numbers, use a second goal and goalkeeper and have players alternate between the goals. Ensure players have a go from both sides.
Picture 1: Wide player has the ball in a wide area, playing on a side different to their dominant foot, cuts inside away from the pole/ defender(s) into space and shoots with their strongest foot to curl past the goalkeeper.

Progressions:
- Encourage the players to try different shots, outside of the foot towards the near post or a straight driven shot towards either post.
- Encourage wingers to try and use the outside of the foot if they are not "inverted" i.e. a right footed player on the right, to get the curve away from the goalkeeper.
Coaching points:
- Take a touch with lace or outside of foot towards the pole/ defender as if enticing a poke tackle. When getting close to the pole/ defender, cut with the outside of foot to cut infield.
Outside cut: Take a big step away from the ball with the weaker foot and drop the shoulder on the same side to then push off the planted foot and push the ball infield with the outside of the foot to beat pole/ defender to shoot.
Inward curling shot (out to in)- Shoot with the instep or inside of your strong foot, make contact slightly to the left of the middle if on the left, or right if on the right.
- Ensure there is a follow through either across the body or slightly in front and across to generate the spin to curve the ball, head over the ball.
Outside of foot shot: Once past defender take a big step with non-kicking foot pointing towards desired target next to the ball and kick through middle of the ball but ensure hitting across the ball i.e. with right foot, hit from slightly right of the middle and hit through ball while moving foot across the ball so the ball leaves the foot left of the middle.
- Follow through with head over the ball, foot slightly across the body and infront.
- Driven shot - Plant non-kicking forward towards target and drive laces through the centre of the ball, with a straight follow through, head over the ball. The straighter the follow through, the straighter the shot (assuming a clean contact),
- Hit slightly below the middle to add lift, or slightly above the middle for all shots. For curled shots, more spin and bigger the non-kicking foot step=more curl.
