Organization:
Space roughly 25x30 yds.
One team split evenly on one side of field, other team split evenly on other side.
Soccer balls split evenly with attacking team.
Instructions:
2v2 - play starts on attacking team's first touch.
Attacking team going to goal, defending team with counter goal.
All players must start in their corners.
If goal is scored or ball goes out of play, next two attackers are ready to go with a ball against next two defenders (Ball always starts with attacking team).
Coaching Points:
Angle of approach to the ball - cut off goal first to prevent quick shot.
Establish 1st and 2nd defenders.
1st defender - close down quickly, slow on approach, side-on.
2nd defender - cover - block angle to score, communicate where play should be forced, be ready to become 1st defender if ball moves or teammate is beat.
Progressions:
Both teams have soccer balls (Emphasize transition/reaction) - play starts with team in possession e.g. if it goes out off of red, black starts next ball.
"Make it, take it" - if black scores, they can start another ball right away.
Regressions:
Coach plays out balls to give defenders more time to react.

Shadow defense
Organization:
4 channels roughly 15x5 yds each.
Soccer balls placed alternating near and far side of each channel as shown.
Players in two groups on each end of the channel
Instructions:
Attacker (black) dribbles into the middle toward defender (red).
The defender closes down quickly and gets into good defensive posture.
Attacker turns, dribbles back to starting point, leaves ball there, and goes to next channel.
Now the roles have switched - black player is shadow defending and red player is attacking with ball.
Once the first pair has moved to the second channel, the next pair can go.
Coaching Points:
Close down quickly on attacker's first touch to shrink the space.
Slow down upon approach to attacker.
Get side-on, stay on toes ready to react.
