2v1 Lines

Coaching Points:

As much as possible encourage to attack the left foot of the defender

Off-Ball Positioning:

The Possession Line: Position 1 on diagram. This positions ensures that we keep possession but does not eliminate the defender. A possession line / pass shifts the defenders position and can be used to create the elimination pass/line.

The Elimination Line: Position 2: This is the passing line and off-ball player position that eliminates the defender on the first touch. The role of the receiving player is to accelerate the play forward on the first touch. To open up the elimination line, the on-ball player must engage the defender and get her to shift her weight

The Interception Line: Position 3: This is the passing line that is played through the line of the defender. This may also be called the shadow space, where the off-ball attacker is hiding in the shadow of the defender. This position allows the defender to intercept the ball. If playing in the shadow/intercepting line, the off-ball attacker must make double leads / s leads in the defenders blind spot.

  • Engage the Defender with the eyes and ball carry position
  • Off-ball player needs to find the elimination position
How to Play:
  • Set Up a 5x5 to 10x10 Square (This can be done in larger or small space
  • 4 attacking players stand on the outside of the square on each line. a defender play

This is an addition variation of the Box + 1 - where players are put in teams  of three. One team goes horizontal across the square. The other is trying to go vertical. The attacking player with the ball on the endline/sideline can join the grid to make a 2v1. When the ball starts on the opposite side - only 1 player can begin in the central space

Ladders

Coaching Points:

  • Small Space 2v1s - Attacking and Joining the play in a small area
  • Decision between passing or carrying to eliminate the defender
  • Accelerating the play in small space
  • Attack the left foot of the defender

How to Play:

  • Set up Grid: 25 yards long and 5-10 yds wide (width determines the space size). Separate the 25 yds into 3 grids
  • An attacker and defender starts in each grid
  • Each team starts with a pile of balls at each end. One team starts on attack
  • The objective is to make it through the ladder to the other side to score a point. If defense wins the ball, they are trying to go the other way.
  • It starts as a 2v1 in the first box. If they make it through One attacker from the first box joins the second box. Same for the third box and over the line. DEFENDERS DO NOT JOIN.
  • Once they cross the line. They become the defense. The opposing team becomes the attack and goes the other way. An attacker and defender starts in each box.
  • Play for a certain amount of time and see how many points the teams can earn
To Goal Variation:
  • Small concept and size but the attackers are trying to score a goal. Defense scores by winning the ball and possessing over the 25 yds. New ball always restarts with the attack at the 25 yds.

Size Variation:

  • Adjust the size of the grids - make the end grids small and the mid grid large to encourage acceleration and deceleration in the 2v1

Coaching Points:

  • Find the Elimination Line:
  • Attack the Left Foot of the Defender
  • Give and Go
  • Passing and Receiving on the Move
How to Play:
  • Set up a grid (size of grid determines the type of 2v1) (10x15 or 15x20)
  • Two Neutral Players stand on the side as your "walls"
  • The attacking player is trying to play a 2v1 with the walls. And get from line to line
  • When the walls receive they can either play a give and go or they can enter the grid and eliminate with the first touch
  • If the walls enter, the attacker must replace the wall on the side. the neutral player can remain on ball in the square if the walls are filled
  • If the defense wins the ball, they become the attack, and the neutral players switch back to the walls
  • 2pts for a give and go 2v1. 1 point for all other eliminations.

How to Play

  • Set up field as shown in diagram. Goal is on diagnoal 15 yds from 25. Adjust field size as desired
  • 3 circles start on attack to goal against 2 defenders. If attackers score the next ball starts with the opponent (triangles). The two defenders become attackers and two circles step on as defenders at the other goal
  • If the defense wins the ball in the run of play, the attack has 5 seconds to win the ball back (you could also create a tackle back line). The extra attacker can join on the ball win, so if the attack wins the ball back it is a 2v3.
