Crossing and Finishing Warm up (15 mins)

Set Up

15 mins10 players6 balls8 bibs12 cones45x20 area

Setup

Players divided into 2 teams with each team in 20x10 area passing and moving. On coaches call, "SWITCH" teams deliver and cross the ball from one area to another.

Make it easier:

Take away the mannequins in the middle and focus on the techniques

Get the players in pairs and work on crossing techniques

Make it more challenging:

Add a defender in to the finishing stage

Add an overlap in before the cross

Learning Objectives

Technical Technical
Key Coaching PointsAccuracy of the pass/crossPlayers to put the ball into the area where the GK can't collect and the strikers have a chance to score. In-between the 6 yard box and the penalty spot.Timing of runsStrikers need to time their runs so they are coming onto the ball with speed. If the strikers make their movements to soon they will be in front of the ball or they will become easy to defend against. Also when timing runs, a variation of speed is important. For example, start slow and then explode into a finishing position.Type of attacking runs into the area to finishWhen working with another striker you can make two different movements. Here are a few examples. One striker attacks the front post and the second striker arches their run the back post. First striker attacks the front post space while the second striker holds their movement on the edge of the box for a cut back.

Crossing And Finishing: Technical Practice

Set Up

6 balls10 cones25x25 area

Setup

Players on orange cone pass and combine to deliver a cross for 2 x attackers to finish from yellow square. Rotate roles of players.

Make it easier:

The crosser just takes a touch out of their feet and crosses the ball. This will allow the strikers to work on their movement.

Make it more challenging:

Add one defender in the box

Staggered midfield triangle, quality possessionWidth and depth to stretch defence Wingers be positive and take on fullbackQuality of the delivery into box (driven, whipped, low and hard, clip to back post, etc)Quality of finish and numbers in box to score Combinations as well if 2 v1 or 3v1 Transition to defence

Crossing and Finishing 9v9 Game (25 mins)

Organisation:

Goal line to edge of box with attacking full backs removed and defending teams wide players removed by line of cones from half way line to 4 yards past goal. Ball starts with blue team GK after ball moving out of play.

Goal: To improve wide players movement to get ball, decision making on the ball, delivery into the box to create goal scoring opportunities from both sides in a realistic game environment/. Be aware of T2D.

Attacking team play a 1-2-3-3 and defending team a 1-4-3-1. Attacking teams fullbacks have been removed alongside defensive teams wingers. This was purposely done to improve wide attackers attacking play. Fullbacks may be included in a session in the next few weeks. Inverted left winger (right footer)

Oppositions role is to win the ball back and score on goal. Stay compact, be hard to break down and work hard to win the ball back.

Learning Objectives

Technical Technical
Key Coaching PointsMovement to get the ball wideWhen coaching this drill it is important to make it realistic. Players should be looking to move into wide areas to receive the ball to deliver a cross. Player should not be in the wide area for more that 3 seconds without receiving the ball.Awareness of team mates and defenders positioningWhen the players are in wide area they need to recognise when to cross early or when to drive down the line before crossing. If there are forwards in the box and the defenders are unbalanced then encourage players to cross early. If the defenders are set up and there are no forwards in the box then wide players should be running with the ball down the line and forwards should be moving effectively to create goal scoring opportunities.Finishing techniquesForwards need to get into goal scoring opportunities and finish first time using all different techniques depending on the type of cross, heading, volleying, shooting.

Crossing and Finishing SSG (20 mins)

Setup

20 mins11 players6 balls11 bibs12 cones25x20 area

2 x teams of 4 + floating player (S) who plays for team in possession. When a team is in possession, a player can dribble or move to receive in the wide area to deliver a cross unopposed (defending team not allowed in to wide area). If team finishes from a cross = 3 goals.

Make it more challenging:

Add more players and increase the size width of the area.

Progression finish with a normal game.
