General Breaking lines (20 mins)

General practice in possession

Welsh way principles - Breaking lines

Understand when and how to play through, around and over the opposition based on the type of pressure applied.

Area Size

20mtr x 14 mtr with a half way line (May vary depending on age and ability)

Football behind the Yellow outside players

4 x Blue, 4 x Red and 3 x Yellow bibs.

3 x 2 min with time set aside for terminal feedback in the breaks.

Coaches position in one of the corners so I can see the whole pitch.

The Session Details

First 2 min Block the Reds will be encouraged to play around the Blues.

Team in possession try and play around the opposition and score by transferring the ball from one end yellow player to the other. If they are successful they can maintain possession of the ball. Teams in possession can use the yellow common players that creates a 7 v 4. Players are locked in to their zones to begin with with the central free player having freedom to move in to both zones.

The coach will be working with the RED team trying to maintain possession while the BLUE team will be managed to be realistic in the way the apply pressure on the ball and defend using the key points. When the Blue team wins the ball they maintain possession of the ball and try and score, the REDS must attempt to wins the ball back working on the out of possession principles. If the Blue team are having more success in possession they will challenged to a number of touches, time on the ball etc.

The outside Yellow player can't be closed down to begin with.

Key points RED Team

1. Make the pitch big (Width and Depth)

2. Try to play through, around and over

3. Can we move the ball quicker

4. Can we entice the defender to create more space to go forward

5. Look to play forward

6. Receive on the half turn, on the back foot, check shoulders

Out of possession Blue Team will be managed to be realistic in their press

1. Defend narrow

2. Force out wide

3. Protect the middle

4. Prevent split passes

Conditions, Challenges and Targets RED team

1. Players try to break the lines by going around they will score 1 point.

2. Outside players limited to 3 touch but must pass in 3 sec

3. Extra 2 points if the can play through the middle.

4. Extra 3 points if they can play a direct pass.

5. Can they play short then play over on their first touch

Defensive team BLUE

1. Restrict touches

2. Restrict time

3. Extra point if the REDS fail to pass through the middle

What to expect playing around.

1. They will start by being attracted to the ball and not making the pitch big width and depth. (WHY) to create space centrally

2. Body position needs to be open using the touchline as a guide, side on, so the player can see most of the pitch. (HOW & WHO)

3. Players not moving the ball quickly taking to many touches. (WHY) allowing the defenders to re group and get back in to position.

4. The outside wide players need to be brave on the ball and with their first touch take the ball beyond the defence. (HOW)

5. Movement from the outside players so the are always in a position to receive

(WHEN)

Play through

Second 2 min block Playing through

Central player need to get his body position right, be side on ready to to receive on the back foot. He needs to be scanning over his shoulder so he has an idea what to do with the ball next and from where the pressure is coming.

Conditions, Challenges and Targets RED team

1. Extra 2 points if the can play through the middle.

2. Outside players are restricted to 2 touches.

3. Outside players can be closed down after their first touch.

4. Central yellow player can't score directly and must link play with the team in possession.

What to expect by playing through

1. The central player needs to look for gaps in between the defenders to receive, body position needs to be side on, receive on the back foot, safe side.

(HOW & WHY) So we can play forward quickly while protecting the ball.

2. Can we entice the pressure so we can relive the pressure. (WHY) if the defender is nearer to the ball carrier and will try and commit to wining it leaving him out of position so we can exploit the space vacated.

3. Working on triggers and movement from the two wide players once the ball is rec ivied by the yellow free player so he has more than one option. (WHEN & WHY)

4. Looking at the weight of ball it will need to be played with speed as the defenders will be looking to protect the middle. (WHY & HOW)

5. If a defender closes down the outside player it creates more space in the middle to exploit. Challenge for the outside player to have an idea of where the ball is going to before he get it, play with his head up. (WHY & WHEN)

What does the other coach do

1. For this block I will need them other team to protect the middle, keep narrow and make it hard for my team to play through.

Play over

Third 2 min Block the Reds will be encouraged to play over the Blues.

The outside players can't pass direct with out involving inside players first.

Conditions, Challenges and Targets RED team

1. Extra 3 points if they can play a direct pass.

2. Can they play short then play over on their first touch

3. Outside players have two touches to control and pass.

4. Outside players can be closed down after their first touch.

5. Teams in possession can rotate player between zones but there can't be more than 3 players from the same team in one zone.

6. One of the players in possession can drop in to the end zone when outside player is closed down

What to expect by playing over

1. Weight of the ball needs to be good from the lay off (WHY) to deliver a first time ball and from the resulting direct pass as the receiver will only have two touches to deal with the ball.

2. When the ball is in the air the players need to be able to give the outside player an option straight away. (WHEN & WHO)

3 . The defenders will be expecting the ball to be played over them and will try to stop the ball at source which allows more room to play centrally.

4. Rotating the players will get them used to the rotational aspect of the SSG. Working on communication and triggers for movement. (WHEN & WHY)

What does the other coach do

1. The other team will have to work hard to block the pass over them, which should allow extra space in the middle.

The Session Details

Teams set up in a 2 v 2 in one half and a 1 v 1 in the other with two wide free players that play for the team in possession. The Red goalkeeper starts the game and feeds either of the defender or if possible play a direct ball through the gates in to the wide players who is then allowed to come inside the pitch and try and score in a 2 v 1 for the attacking team. If the Blues win the ball they are allowed to keep possession and try to break lines using the same principle of passing through the gates and trying to score in a 3 v 2.

Conditions, Challenges and Targets RED team

1. Can we score in less than 5 touches = 2 goals

2. Score from a first time pass from the goal keeper = 2 goals

4. extra point for a first time pass through the gates

5. Players to keep on side

6. 5 seconds to score once in attacking half

Key points

1. Make the pitch big (Width and Depth)

2. Weight of pass

3. Can we move the ball quicker

4. Can we entice the defender to create more space to go forward

5. Look to play forward

What to expect

1. If the defenders are blocking the gates direct from the keeper can we split the defenders so we can entice the defenders to close down and then get the keepe to play it forward quickly

2. Striker to position himself so the defender in his half can't block the pass through the gates (MAKING THE PITCH BIG)

3.Timing of the runs from the free wide players so they run on to the ball and not standing receiving the ball

4. If the blues don't close down defenders can we get the ball through the gates to the striker so he can combing with the wide player.
