Vertical movement out of possession
When to press/move up the pitch: We have pressure on the ball, when the ball is travelling (particularly towards their own goal), when the opposition player in possession is facing their own goal, when an opposition player takes a bad touch, when we think the player in possession does not have the ability to harm us (poor player on wrong foot for example, when we think the opposition player has the opportunity to score. When to retreat: When the opposition player is not being pressed, has time and the ability to play a ball in behind or a ball that could hurt us.
