Attacking Corner

In swinging Corners

In swinging Corners are statistically the most effective corners.

In swinging corners are harder to defend, and often cause panic as the ball is delivered into the front half of the goal

Whilst some coaches have a desire and belief that a change to an out swinger will cause surprise for the opposition.

However the opposite is often the case, where the opposition will have a degree of relief from effective in-swinging corners.

The Set up

The set up shows a corner on the right hand side, with a left footed player taking the corner

The target area is marked as an A

The kicker is trying to deliver the ball between head height and the bar

Not seen in the set up are the red defenders, being a centre back and goalkeeper.

This formation is based on the assumption that the defending team has brought all players back.

This may need to be changed, with player "5" and or "6" dropping deeper based on number of opposition players defending the corner

The Players

  • The kicker is trying to deliver the ball between head height and the bar
  • The near post player moves towards the ball as it is kicked.  His job is to get a touch and flick the ball across the goal.
  • The near post player is often a tall player
  • The next players behind the near post player stand close to the goal line and as the ball is kicked, move towards the 6 yard line where they can attack any ball entering that area

It may mean a double movement of out and then back in again, depending on the delivery

  • The player at "2" attacks the rear of the prime scoring area
  • The players at "3" attack towards the far post
  • The players at "4" attack towards the middle of the goal
  • The players at "5" and "6" hold there positions to pick up any rebounds
