Take 2 or 3 players out of the area and take their balls off them. These players now become defenders and on the coaches command they enter the area and try to kick out all the other players balls. The last 2 or 3 players remaining in the area in possession of their balls become the defenders for the next round.

Split the players into 2 teams and then pair a player from each team together. try to match the players by size and ability.
All of the players from one team start with the balls and they dribble about the area. the player paired with them from the other team tries to win the ball and gain possession. if the ball goes out of the area or they win the ball then its their turn to try and keep possession of the ball.
Coaching points to improve shielding the ball
1. observation - the player with the ball should know where the defender is at all times either by looking or feeling.
2. body shape - can the player keep their body between the ball and the defender. keep a long barrier when the defender is close.
3. technique - control the ball away from the defender. for example if the defender is to the right the player should use the outside of the left foot to move the ball away to the left.
Progressions
younger players
1. make the area bigger
2. give a short time limit
Older or better players
1. make the area smaller
Competition
As there is a player from each team in each pair we can stop the drill after a certain amount of time and add up how many players from each team has the ball. team with the most balls wins. each drill should restart with all the players from one team having the ball and this team should be switched before each round.

Within the same area, Split the players into 7 attackers and 3 defenders. the 2 defenders should hold a bib in one of their hands. Play with 1 ball.
The 7 attackers play to keep the ball with the 3 defenders trying to win possession of the ball. If a defenders wins the ball they throw the bib on they are holding on the floor and becomes an attacker. the attacker who lost possession of the ball picks up the bib and becomes a defender.
Question and coaching the players
1. does the player with the ball need to pass it? if not, can they retain possession by shielding the ball until a team mate is available.
2. this drill will need perserverance with youger players, so knowing your players and their ability to understand this drill is critical.

End the session by introducing the goals and extend the pitch leave so it is a standard pitch. The players can now finish by playing a normal game.
Observe the players and encourage them to put into practice maintaining possession.

warm up - ball work
Utilise 2 thirds of the pitch for the warm up.
During the warm up each player will have a ball each. they are tasked with dribbling around the area set up, using both feet, inside, outside, sole and laces. this is to promote them being comfortable on the ball with either foot.
After a couple of minutes challenge them to use only one foot, then to only use the other foot.
Challenge them by asking can you faster, can you switch from one foot to the next whilst keeping control.
