Head Throw Catch (15 mins)

The session: Head throw catch

Set up:

- 4x2min games with 1 min rest in between

- 30x24 field.

- Players can either head the ball, throw it or catch it

- Players cannot move with the ball in their hands.

- Players cannot throw two consecutive passes (a throw must be followed by a head).

- A goal cannot be scored by throwing into the net (must be head or other body part)

- Name fields (eg: Champions League, Premier League)

Key messages:

- Movement

- Form triangles

- Communication

- Awareness

- Fun!

**Paint Pictures - Can a 6 throw a ball to a 9 for the 9 to head a short ball back to a 10 (use positions and game-related patterns)**

Progressions:

- Introduce chest, volleys, thighs

- Change methods of scoring i.e. must be a volley

- Time limit with ball in hands

Competitions/challenges:

- Points

- Rewards/punishments

- Competition! Make it competitive!

- Winners move up Losers move down

Possession (15 mins)

The session: Combination Play Possession

The Set-up

30 x 30 grid with minigoal in each corner.

5v5+5 neutrals (4 wall players and 1 on inside)

4x2mins with 1min rest in between

Team in posession must combine with outside player to score in one of the minigoals.

Players rotate through outside positions.

Key Messages:

Break the line with pass/first touch

Backfoot receive

Open body position

3 Checks

Style your pass

Lots of rotations and movement for middle players

Progression:

Limit touchs, 2 for middle players, 1 for outside players

Winning team with most goals

Finishing Practice (10 mins)

Set up:

- As shown

- Reds vs Blue

- Player 1 dribbles from A to B and stops ball for Player 2 to run onto

- Player 1 continues their run around the pole to apply pressure to Player 2

- Reds and blues return to their own line

- If blue wins the ball back, they score by passing in 1 of the mini goals on the side.

- Keep count of goals and switch after two minutes.

**If player 1 cheats by setting a bad ball they will lose points**

KEY POINTS:

- 1st touch away from pressure

- Finish early

- Shooting technique

- High tempo to get lots of reps

Receiving Back to Goal (15 mins)

The Session: Receiving back to goal

Set up:

- 2 teams lined up beside the coach.

- Neutral team is 25 yards out between the poles.

- The coach will play the ball out to the Neutral Player who play the ball in front tof X1 and X2. The player with the ball then turns and attacks the big goal.

- The neutral player between the poles joins in to make it 2v1.

- If the defender win the ball they score in either of the mini goals.

- Rotate roles. 

Key Messages:

- Anticipate coaches pass.

- Aggressiveness to maintain possession of the ball. Step in front of defender (attacker receives a foul or maintains possession).

- Bravery to beat defender with skill.

- Be unpredictable with skills.

- Overlapping runs. Create space for the player with the ball.

**Ensure defensive and attacking transitions are kept in mind**

Progressions:

- Different angle of attack.

- Increase/decrease space and number of players. 3v3 3v2 etc

- Only use the big goal. Encouraging quicker transition between attack and defence.

Competition & challenges:

- Points.

- Time limit.

All in Game (25 mins)

The Session: Allin Game

Set-up:

- Use half a field or more if available

- Set players out in positions

- Coach the team in Blue

- Set players in positions you have in mind for matches

Set attacking patterns

- Lightswitch transitions

- Have players look forward as soon as they win back the ball and make forward runs

- Fullbacks start high and wide close enough to make the deep run but not too close as to get marked (see diagram)

- Forward runs from deep

- Encourage 8 and 10 to run towards box at very slight angle to pull other players away or receive

- Use the cue of a teammate coming towards the ball for the midfielder to run from deep and seeing space infront

- Number 9 to play between the central defenders and look to isolate 1 central defender if possible, also look to play off the shoulder and make runs in behind

- flood the pitch with forward runs

- create zig zags

- finish the attack - quality shooting
