Description

Tactical Aim - For players to work as a unit in their back 4 with the understanding of when, where, and how to position themselves while defending and attack from opposition.

Tactical Objective 1 -  Explain, demonstrate, and put in to practice the role of the defending player applying pressure to an attacker.

Tactical Objective 2 - Explain, demonstrate, and put in to practice the role of the supporting defender covering for the defender applying pressure.

Tactical Objective 3 - Explain, demonstrate, and put in to practice the role of the remaining defenders to provide balance for the back 4.

Personal Aim - To enhance my coaching communication skills.

Personal Objective - To engage with the group with the use of open ended questions, positive reinforcement, coaching points, and praise.

Warm up (5 mins)

Organizational / Instructions - Dynamic stretching and jogging/short sprints for 2-3 minutes. After that everyone should get a partner and the rule of the game is that they need to tap their partners hamstring area to get a point but the same time try prevent being tapped.

Coaching Points - Bend the knees, light footed, anticipate bursts of movement, stand side on, focus on balance.

Technical practice (15 mins)

Organizational / Instructions - There will be 3 teams of 4 defending as a unit. The blue mannequins indicate opposition. When I call 1 of the 4 cone colours (red, blue, white, yellow) both groups position themselves in a position to help support the pressing defender. When I shout drop the defence need to drop back and that is when the other group will come in.

Coaching Points - Pressure, cover/support, balance, side on, bent knees, light footed, communicating.

Progressions / Adaptations - Progression would be when I blow the whistle, whoever is applying the pressure will then take the ball from the cone and play a pass to either full back who then plays a pass in to the mini goals which would represent a winger in a real game. If the pressing player is a full back when the whistle is blown he cannot win the ball and play a pass in to the mini goals, he has to switch the play to the other full back with one long pass or work along the back 4 with short passes. Ultimately the quicker the better.

After a few attempts from each group this will become a race.

The next progression is that either full back has the option to intercept the other teams through ball to the winger. For example if the left back in the reds has played his pass to the right back he can now be ready to intercept a pass coming from the blue right back intended for the mini goals (winger).

Questioning ? - Why should we stand side on when defending? (Able to adjust body position more efficiently)

When should we open up as a unit?(in possession of the ball, more space to play with)

Game related (15 mins)

Organizational / Instructions - The attacking team play a lofted ball in to the defence and the defence clear the ball with a header then the play continues from there with the attacking team looking to penetrate and score a goal. If the defence win the ball they can try build out from the back, one of the resting attacking players can come in to play and support the defending team with the intent to play a pass in to either mini goal for a point. Defenders will be switched so everyone gets a chance to fulfil each role.

Coaching Points - communication, if someone's going to commit to a tackle the cover has to be there, balance, don't get dragged out of position unless a clear cut chance of interception is available, side on, timing of tackle, when the back 4 becomes a 5 look to transition to attack quickly and get the ball to the wing backs and push up the field to act as attacking players rather than sitting back maintaining a defensive position.

Progressions / Adaptations - The back four now becomes a back 5 (3 CB & 2 Wing backs) The attacking team also gets an additional midfielder and additional striker.

Questions ? - How can we force the striker to the by-line? (By positioning our body side on facing the by-line, but being slightly to the right side of the striker.)

Why is this beneficial to us? (pushing the striker away from our goal)

Why do we squeeze the pitch when applying pressure?(make us hard to play through)

When should the defence be communicating?(all times, in and out of possession)

Cool down (5 mins)

Organizational / Instructions - Light jogging & side stepping gradually changing to walking pace followed by a series of static stretches demonstrated by me.

Coaching Points - breathing in through the nose and out of the mouth slower heart rate, hold stretches for a few seconds making sure their muscles feel the stretch. Steady pace at which the stretches are performed.
