PLAYING UNDER PRESSURE (20 mins)
Playing Under Pressure: RONDO
Players on outside of area are asked to combine with their team-mates while being put under pressure from two defenders.
The maximum amount of touches the outside players are allowed will vary between 1 & 2 touches.
If either of the two defenders can get a touch or win the ball they quickly change places with the outside player who has given the ball away.
The outside players look to combine and must choose to pick the correct moment to split the defenders with a penetrating pass.
Progression:
The defenders can only become an outside player if either of them after winning the ball can dribble outside the square. The outside players must react as a team to defenders winning the ball and look to win the ball back keeping the defenders inside the square. If defenders can dribble from the square they choose two outside players to become the new defenders.
The idea of the drill is to help players learn to pass the ball under pressure with limited touches and encourage them to improve their attitude to winning the ball back before it leaves that particular area. The hope is that when the players lose the ball in a match situation their mindset is to look to win the ball back immediately. Also if the players can form the attitude of how important it is to look after the ball when in possession of it they will quickly understand that they don't have to run as much to win it back.
